Stalls Stands' Side. Full meeting the previous day on SHV ground with majority of the straight track fields grouping up centre track. No rain since that meeting expected so S for this evening meeting. Going Stick from 07:00am on the day. Strong NE Wind = Three-quarter Tailwind from the Right. Slow Time and remember that the winner won by a time that equates to a verbal translation as "6L" (can we get to publishing the actual times at some point with what it equates to as an Average Speed? Rather than this indirect and imprecise method). Which means the runner-up ran 1.2s slower (BHA uses 5L per Second on Soft Turf) which would be the slowest time run at the track since start 2004 if he had been first home. Only two times slower since the track was redeveloped and more drainage added with Chiswick Bey winning the Brocklesby in 64.35s on SGS in 2010 and late OR60s filly Dispol Kylie ran 64.12s in April 2008. Cumbrian Craic the first Debut winner of the season for Tim Easterby and he usually gets between 1-3 each year with OR85+ types. The large majority of the debut wins in Apr-May with the odd leak into early June and a very rare July held-up in training one. The normal place to 'expect' to see a debut win from him is at Ripon with a filly. His runners in the 2 x Ripon fillies' races this month have not gone well and suggest that perhaps he has still to show his best filly. But, while pondering that after the Ripon race earlier in the afternnon the Paddock Review for this race proved especially informative. One sight of CCraic and anyone would be able to tell this was a better debut for Easterby. A very strong and compact sprinter who looks the OR85+ part. Added to that he is in the best condition and outpoints the favourite on any worthwhile measure. Much fitter than the fav, coat in excellent condition and a lively attititude but still well under control. Ridden confidently in front setting a pace which put pressure on the others. Able to delay his effort ntil coming to the last 1F and a real forward effort at that point. Likeable sprinter although proven only on soft here. Will rate OR85+ and has the scope to improve. Easterby would perhaps run him next in the Novice at York in May? Another green and unready debut from a Dascombe 2yo with Barracuda Boy and the seasons when he was getting 20-25% Strike Rate with newcomers seem long gone. He really does need to have a superior one, even then in a helpful race set-up, to get a debut win now. Which makes the 6/5fav here seem a bit thin. This was a small field but look back at the debut SPs for Dascombe horses over the last 3 years and those that have got this short have usually been better horses and a number of debut wins. But some slow developing disappointments mixed in like Winter Hill & Electric Qatar. BB another LM sprinter although not as compact and definitely not as strong as CC. But, less fit than CC and generally not as 'glowing'. In the race he then showed what now seems the typical Dascombe debut lack of nous. Slightly slow break but then recovered ok. However, a slight bump after 1.5F and then started losing ground and 6L (a 'visual 6L' and not a 'Time 6L') behind the winner. An ok response then in the last 2F but perhaps more the OR75-83 Open Maiden type than a better one. Hints of usable OR60s promise from the next two home. Only For You a slow start from a wide draw on debut and never got into the race. A slow start here then ran too freely in the first half of the race. Went second best for 3/5F+ of the race and only 2L off the leader at halfway. Another short-runner on soft but worth checking for lower level development. Trainer Shaun Harris has perhaps managed to get a winner with the only usable 2yo he has had in 3 years and only 6 horses. By his standards Blue Clumber made a solid debut despite being a bit green. Seemed to get partly outpaced then staying on again in the last 2f. Another to check for low level competitiveness as he developed. Silver Fawn a lesser type and OR50s at best and no chance of that here because he was too stupid & fizzy in the prelims. He seemed more settled at the start but back to the clueless flapping in the race and adrift by halfway. Jockey still niggling away with SF on the rail around the last 1f pole and presumably trying to teach the horse something. But, either through tiredness or stupidity the horse jinked right then stumbled badly and fell over forward and firing the jockey into the ground over it's head.
