SUMMARY
Race Transferred from Ascot, along with the full meeting, after that was abandoned by Monday. Class 2 Race at Ascot and now a Class 4. Group 3 Sagaro Stakes and 2 x Listed events also transferred.

Medium Northerly Wind = Half Tailwind from the Left in the Back Straight, varying Crosswind from the Right around the bend and then a Half Headwind from the right in the last 1.5F in the Home Straight.

Fast time by recent standards. Only 3 races faster since the AW track opened and they were all run in the month of October in the period 2007-9. Fastest was 59.11s by Hadaf racing off OR79 in a Nursery. Sir Geoffrey ran 59.51s off OR76 and Desert Poppy 59.5s in a fillies' maiden. That filly rated OR73 after the win and dveloped over the next two seasons to OR90s ratings.

Slightly baffling race to marry up the visual impression and the fast time. Richard Hughes back riding after his 50 day suspension picked up in India. Visually it appeared he was allowed to get a comfortable time in the lead and able to control the race and just wind the pace up in the straight. Perhaps the others gave him a bit too much leeway and, as is often the case in the short straight here, it proves very difficult to run a leader who is travelling within himself down. If that was the case what time would they have run if they had turned this into a flat out war? Presumably they would have broken the 5f course record. Kempton tend to prepare the track to be very fast when they have better class racing on (like the Eatser meeting) and perhaps they did that today given the Ascot Group & Listed races transfer? But, then both the 3rd & 4th home were fading by the finish so perhaps they had actually been dragged along at a stiff pace and Lyric Ace made it look easier than it actually was and Hughes good at staying anonymous if things are going to plan and not needing to get into MOAS mode like some jockeys? Ok, well if that was the case then didn't Chilworth Icon run much better than the result will read? Hmm.

Hannon used to use the early Kempton races to introduce some of his best early sprint 2yos and a range of Listed & Group winners included. That had not been the case for a few years but Lyric Ace talked up as if one of that type on debut here. He got behind in a strong race that day but showed some real promise in making some ground in the straight. His STO run was solid but muddied by a rail bias and his opponents folding too early to be just the pressure he applied. But, a comfortable win in what appears a good time here and did it as if he could have produced more if pressed. Again, you could argue the pressure he applied broke the two opponents who sat closest to his pace. The question is probably the still the same one in quality terms and how long he can develop into the season - is he Monsieur Chevalier or Prince Of Denmark? Just show me you can do it once more to a stronger field.

Lyric Ace's success and promise of better wins must have Mick Channon turning the air blue. He, or his best friend, bought Lyric Ace's dam back in 2002 as a yearling as a broodmare prospect given her links to high class German sprinters. She was pretty small but he managed to win with her so job done. She then went to Channon & his friend's (Patrick Trant?) Norman Court Stud and was mated with various stallions that stud stood like Fraam & Imperial Dancer. She would have been covered by Sixties Icon is she had still been there. But she didn't produce much and just one winner at seller level. So they sold the dam on and as soon as she is somewhere else she drops Lyric Ace on the ground. Mucking Farvelous, eh Mick?

Still, Mick and his mate can look at Chilworth Icon and think about whether they have stumbled into something with Sixties Icon as a sire. Channon has managed 4 wins with different 2yos by the sire and insists that they are not as slow as the 'St Leger winner' sire billing would suggest. The four wins were all on softer turf in slower times. CIcon went best of those when comfortably sitting behind a stiff pace at Bath and always looking like the winner. Smaller type and delivers more than his looks promise unless the time of this race is misleading. Consider he made a slow start here (again) and was probablt 5-6L off LA's lead after half a furlong. The way he made 2L back into the bend is part of the evidence for Hughes slowing the pace on the bend. CIcon still 3L+ behind at halfway. He took some time to get going but a strong finish and beaten just under 2L. Which means he ran the second half of the race, and the last 4.5F quicker than Lyric Ace. Which would suggest Channon might have a point. Bt, CIcon should also stay further although you would think he would find Listed level beyond him so how comfortably would LA have to have won here to be Listed+?

Baddilini seemed disappointing even though he was giving 4lbs away. Travelled will enough in second but unable to respond as Hughes wound up the pace into the straight. He had taken time to get going at Windsor but that looked like greenness and he seemed well on top by the finish if not separating himself from the others. In a faster test here he didn't seem to have the pace to respond and then was stalling and fading in the last half furlong. He presumably can show better than this unless the first two really are 'that good'/

Mossgo won a weak race FTO and seemed to show most of what he was capable of here and fading earlier than Baddilini. Gave some trouble loading and looked a bit green and needed his mind making up to make an effort in the straight but did so in the end. But needing 5 people and a hood to get him to consent to go into the stalls and then the whip to put it all in in later race wouldn't seem a good pointer to his developing well.
