SUMMARY
£10k Bonus Race.

Going Report jumped to HVS on day after a Precautionary Inspection. Going Stick reading from 12:30 on the day. 72mm of rain on spread across previous Wed-Sun wih 1mm since and the Race Day forecast Dry with some Sun. Medium to Stiff N to NE Wind = Half Tailwind from left for the 1st uphill 3f then a Crosswind from the left after the tunr into the 2F Home Straight on the highest point of the course. Track apparently at Full Width with no Railing In.

Interesting Race Shape with Forray taking off with his jockey up the Centre of the track and very wide througout. He attracted PM, SBTS & HB over to centre track with him and Lastchancelucas racing alone on the far rail for most of the race. 7lbs Apprentice on the winner looked across at the group who were centre track on the turn to the straight and clearly wondering whether he should switch out wide with them and the other prominent runners all went wide into the Home Straight. Good decision by the apprentice to stay where he was and just concentrate of getting LCL to run straight, the shortest way, to the line. PM did best of those who ran wide throughout and an interesting question as to how the 1.5L he was beaten relates to the extra distance he covered? All later races saw the field stick to the Far Rail and with less spreading out in the straight than usual, if anything.

Leaving aside LCL for a moment the race has a believable shape with the Changeover Point probably just behind SBTS and anything behind that needs a valid excuse to be Open Maiden class. Bill Turner says that HB is similar quality to Just Past Andover so OR70-2 perhaps and need a lesser quality race than this to win and finifhing in about the right place. Obvious type with a valid excuse in Forray to be open maiden class and from the right connections a the right time to match that.

The win for Lastchancelucas owed something to the 7lbs apprentice allowance, the shorter path run and perhaps the strip he ran on (kick up sand at points for example, at times while the others were on untreated turf). But, he wouldn't have been able to win without having solid OR70+ ability and the 100/1 tag just seems like an error. The trainer does front-load so LCL as his first runner ought to have been usable at some level. The dam has produced nothing but include well-grown full siblings who did not move that well. LCL a bit smaller and a balanced sprinter size with some length. Moved well and showed a good reaching action in the straight and a willing attitude while being helpful to the jockey. Probably 100/1 because the trainer thought it would finish midfield and an A7 lengthening the SP. The trainer has only had one FTO win before and that with a targetted succes with an OR84+ type. But, this one fit enough to see the distance out. On size and OR70s nursery type that got a ittle bit lucky here but the SP not reflecting his basic ability properly.

Polski Max green on debut and much better here and also in better condition overall. Strong, medium sprinter and blanced. Probably not much over OR75 but good effort here to do best of the wide runners.

Steer By The Stars another strong debut by a Johnston runner in a £10k bonus race and after a break from the early runners. Probably the better end of his next batch. Lost ground at the start (3L+) but got that back and pressing in the front line at halfway and a solid effort in the straight. Taller, and not the Pivotal bulky sprinter shape. OR78+.

Hillbilly Boy beaten by better horses for the most part but a subdued effort even given that. Jockey seemed determined to hold him up and stop him pulling which meant he took the horse out of a good position in early race. When the race pressed on towards 2F out HB seemed unable to pick-up on the uphill ramp there (Steep turn which many horses do not act that well on). Which meant he was 5L+ back. But, again, even give that a subdued & laboured response in the straight. Running below his best.

Forray ought to be OR80+ and perhaps the best type in the field. Bigger type and strong and moved himself well. Obvious excuse in fading given he ran too freely and ran widest. First runner for McMahon who gets regular FTO wins ut usually from later in the season. The better types typically place FTO this early and Forray would have done with a different race shape. A solid, sighter runner, for owner Fretwell a typical early one for the trainer and Forray should peak STO.

Inchy Coo a suspect 3rd in a moderate race on debut and never involved in that race. Not good enough to compete here.

Trainer Ryan in a period where he often starts a few development projects who are below Open Maiden level. Roland a short, heavy build one and not that fit for debut. Added being mostly stupid to ensure he got well behind in the race. Proabably an OR60s nursery development one.

Mash Postato a reminder that a 16/1 debut for trainer Dods can be 'anything' - competing to win or well back because the Market knows very little about his 2yos. MP very green and unbalanced and barely rideable at times. Worth checking STO.
