G as it had been two days prior. Going Stick Reading from 09:00am. Rail on Bend out by 6yds from 6F out to the Finishing Line. Increases race distances by "approx 10yds". Medium to Stiff Southerly Wind = Headwind before turn to straight, Mostly Crosswind from Left in the Home Straight, Slight Headwind. Meehan website wrt Whippers Boy = "came from a long way back to outclass a field of maidens at Epsom two weeks ago. This represents a steep upward curve, but an excellent home worker, he could well be equal to it. Good each-way candidate." Hannon website = "Obviously, giving weight to nine other winners won't be easy, but we think that Olympic Glory, who is the only one with course form, having bolted up in his maiden here first time out, is better than he looked at Newmarket as he had a hiccup at the start of that week and was probably just short of his best. He coped with that awful ground in the Superlative, but this better surface should suit him well. His Coventry Stakes second was a super run, and we are very hopeful." Slow pace and a bunch finish and not form to read literally and caution over higher ratings for Luhaif & Operation Chariot. Main point to note is the Strong Finish by Olympic Glory to make up 4L in the last 1F as the others were going along together. Similar striking effort to his finish in the Coventry. Has something different to the others. Worth comparing that to the laboured progress of Birdman who was closing OG down at the line in a tougher slog and slower ground at NKMJ LTO. Birdman never seemed likely to be suited by a downhill sprint off a slow pace here. So where did Spencer position him? Well back and effectively out of the race. You really wish the people who put the odd occasions when Spencer's deep closing succeeds into 'Ride Of The Week' had the brains to be able to see the pile of unnecessary deep failures it produces. An over-hyped, one dimensional, jockey with too much 'happening to him' rather than his controlling the situation and making decisions on-the-fly. |
