SUMMARY
£10k Bonus Race.

GS going after a dry night. Going Stick from 10:00am and reading from Stands Side where the stalls are. Reading for Far Side was 7.4.

Light to Medium Easterly Wind = Half Headwind from the Left.

Michael Bell on his website = "Today we introduce a nice two-year-old to the track at Newmarket called KIMBERELLA. He worked well on Wednesday and I hope that he will give a good account of himself. Our only other two-year-old runner was disappointing, so sadly we have not got a line on the ability as of yet."

Meehan about Shearian = "[Blah, nicely, Blah]... he will probably be better for this initial experience."

Average pace at most and winner got a soft lead on the Stands' Rail. Race developed close to the rail in later race and nothing which started, or stayed, out wider made any real progress.

Ten Years after they first appeared at Newmarket's Rowley course for a 2-year spell Sectional Times were available. Presumably as part of the sponsorship for the Group 1 event on the card. The times to cover each Furlong were = 15.13s (0-1f), 11.97s, 11.88s, 11.47s and 12.75s for the last furlong. Which highlights a couple of the problems. Firstly there is no baseline to compare this to. Secondly, the course undulates and the penultimate furlong is mostly downhill and run the fastest. The last 1f finishes uphill and contributes something to much slower time for the last 220 yards.

But, part of that slow time in the last 1F also indicates how most horses and jockeys are taught to make their late race kick at the 2F out mark (440 yards). A good horse can only sustain a 220 yard effort so the last 1F in most races are an exercise in slowing down less than your opponents. New Pearl probably extended his lead by 3-4L in the last furlong but he was not 'quickening away impressively' as the commentator might have it but staying on better have run the race most competently and efficiently down the rail. Presumably close to the best horse as well, mind. In that set up what is Whip use actually for in the last 1F?

But, tough conditions to see out the full 5f strongly and only the winner, the second to some extent plus the 4th & 5th seemed to be going relatively 'forward' at the finish. Which perhaps suggests the Changeover Point is between Kimberella and Bentleysoysterboy although the latter made real places having been held up and an ok size. Anything behind that needs to have a valid excuse to be Open Maiden quality. That split mostly matches up with the SPs and perhaps suggests a stiff enough race despite an average pace to sort the field mostly by quality. Cuisine was entered for the abandoned Ascot conditions race and a typical green and uncompetitive debut for Balding. But the ones he starts at Ascot and better courses usually turn out to be better class so he would seem to be the obvious post-CP lurker. But the Market seemed to have that covered as well.
