SUMMARY
£10k Bonus Race.

SHV 2 days prior and mostly dry since but same Going in am. Going Stick from 12:15pm on day. Note the Going Stick Reading with up to 6.0 by 08:15 on Sat. After two meetings using the 5f 'Inner Course' (Old NH) this meeting on the Outer Course. Stalls Stands' Side. Strong Westerly Breeze = Half Headwind from the Right.

Slow Time. Effie B ran 64.62s with a similar headwind on the Inner Course at the last meeting. This winner carrying 2lbs more and 0.8 slower Going Stick Reading. Only slower time since start 2005 by the OR50s Ace Baby who ran 67.02s in weak early May maiden in 2005 on Soft.

Slow time and Headwind gave a race that was a balance of speed versus staying ability. Also worth thinking about where the horses raced played any part. Field raced off the rail stands' side and some hanging left to centre track by the main pack for various reasons. First 6f race on card similar and won by the widest runner in Centre to Far Side with nothing staying Stands Side. Two of first three home struggled for pace (IHonest and PoeticP) and not really making ground on the more prominent racers until well into the last 1F with that group fading and tiring notably.

Poor quality race overall in 2010-11 with only one winner (of a nursery off OR60) from the 14 horses that did not win. This a lesser edition similar to those on profile and lacking reps from larger or Southern stables. Not a race to be delving much into for future significance and, for example, the Garbage Gap is definitely in front of Betty Boo who is small and very limited. But, 2-3 possibilities or OR60-71 winners to think about amongst the field.

Ishi Honest ridden by Ryan Moore. Had looked to lack pace on debut behind Uncomplicated but had plugged on out of the pack in the last 1F on softer conditions. More of the same here and a result to make you wonder how much different the season would look if wh had the normal mix of GF going with just the odd softer going race. Presumably not as different as you might suppose but if this had been a fast ground 5f then Ishi Honest would not have won it. Niggled along to go with the pace before halfway and unable to make any ground after 2F out as the final race efforts went. But, as the field started to fade and hang left IH able to plug on again and end up winning going away but in a slow time. Not a real Open Maiden type and barely OR70 and nursery future and staying on in testing races looks her preference.

Uncomplicated ran very well and prbably the real best filly in the race. The biggest and a smooth walker and ok mover. Made her own problems with a slow start then running too freely to get back to the leading line into the headwind. Solid effort at 2 out, although only 2nd best and briefly led then stuck at it and led again until well into the final 1F. Only a late fade to assist the plugging on IH to finally get to her. Low OR70s and a better filly than the winner and with more tools if she could run a competent race. Needs to get on with winning given the races are going to get tougher quality at some point.

Poetic Princess more of the same in looking too slow to keep up and outpaced by the efforts and not looking fully wiling. Then finds a little response late on to get into any faders. A poor, volunteer 3rd here late on but no promise. Low OR60s. Betty Boo small and might not even be OR50s. A seller future awaits. Similar story with Shirley's Pride and another small and limited one. But, runs for a trainer who gets them ready to compete FTO and fit and competent here (let him have Uncomplicated and she might well have won already for e.g. rather than the Boyle approach). SP able to run in the leading line with the bigger fillies but soon blwon away and fading after 2F out. Trainer Unett presumably bought Dalhousie Lassie as a sibling to a cheap filly who won twice at 2yo for him last year. But, that one was a balanced, stocky little racer and DL nothing like that. Like two horses stuck together and too lengthy, light behind and not level. Trainer's winners in the last 2 years have both shown up well on debut at long SPs (33/1 winnr and 2nd at the same odds). DL not fit enough nor ready here and no promise. Another OR50s and seller future.

Which means if you were minded to prod around behind Uncomplicated for a future winner then you would be looking at what the 5th-7th home might offer. La Sylphe comes from a Ripon race which is 'working out' badly so far with everything that has run from it belted NTO. LS drifting in the Market here. But, look at her and she is a ready, complete sprinter who can compete in the OR60-5 range. But, as with many for the trainer, she runs much too freely so does not get home (think Profile Star in the same colours in 2011). Pulled to the lead here and holding her head to the right trying to avoid the jockey's grip to halfway. No surprise to see her fade but she ought to be usable on a faster 5f. You would like to be able to run this race again on GF with a tailwind and see were she and the winner finished relative to each other.

Body And Soul the best prospect to produce a future winner in behind though. A solid size and a bit bigger than the winner. A little bit of attitude though. Ran much better than a final position of 6th suggests. GOt to the leading line early and travelled comfortably in it, probably best, despite a bit of mild hanging left before halfway on the outside of the group. Produced a better effort than Uncomplicated to get to the lead and not headed until towards the fianl 0.5F. Strong fade and some hanging after that to end up behind the minor talents. But, OR70+ and check what the Market thinks it knows STO. She was supported earlier in the day which is why she opened as favourite.

What to make of Ishigunnaeatit? Along with the first pair and BAS she was one of the larger fillies in the group. In a good 2011 season nearly everything trainer Burke ran showed a lot of what they had on debut. Of 13 FTOs in 2011 as many as 9 won or placed on debut. The other 4 that finished 5th-9th FTO produced just one season winner (of 9 individual winners in total) and at claiming level. Two debuts this year have produced a competitive 4th and a 5th of 6th by a good horse who struggled in the conditions he met but will improve a lot STO. IshiGun too green to get involved here and moderate promise int he last 2F.
