G from GGF two days prior. 3mm of rain overnight. Going Stick reading from 08:00am. Rail fully in and race distances 'as advertised'. Medium to Stiff SW Wind = Close to Half Headwind from Left in Home Straight, mostly Tailwind on Ridge and Downhill. Odd Race Shape and jockeys on last four through halfway need to be asked what they thought they were doing. First four at halfway had formed up early and went a usable pace with Royal Skies held onto by his jockey and FFH at times but able to see the race out in fast conditions on a track that often favours prominent racing. Jockeys on 5-6th at halfway allowed a 6-8L gap to develop before halfway back from the first 4 and they were effectively putting themselves out of the race. That was a problem for the two jockeys who had hauled their horses to the last pair at the start because they were in behind the pair letting the gap develop. But, did they do anything when they should have realised the race was out of hand before halfway? Of course not. When did you last see a jockey extricate himself from last place in this sort of set up and start trying to bridge the gap before the efforts start and while the pace is slower? Take Felix Fabulla as an example and around 12L+ back at halfway and wandering around away from the rail covering extra distance. Jockey perhaps realised things were out of control towards the straight and tried to make ground around Tattenham Corner wide, a poor choice. FF then pressed by jockey to make a real effort in the straight racing away from the rail. But, how can he make 10-12L up on horses who have never stopped and are running downhill to the finish? A Group winner would struggle. Which meant FF about the same distance back at the finish as he was at the start of the straight so had made a similar effort to the first two home in the last 3F+. But, unable to make any of the 12L headstart he gave them back. If the jockey had ridden him properly and sat in 5th, say, he would have finished 3rd, not a distant 4th, and had a reasonable chance of seeing what he could do to challenge the first two. |
