HV as it had been two days prior and Meeting had to pass an early morning inspection. 5mm of rain overnight. Going Stick reading from Noon. Medium NNW Wind = Direct Headwind. Very Slow time and extended distances and not a 6f test. Slowest previous time since start 2004 was 77.62s in 2008 and that one of only two times slower than 76.6s. The Going Stick reading from noon was 7.6 which means the last 5 juvenile wins this season have been on slower going according to the Going Stick. They have been in the range 6.9 to 7.4. What was going on to make this race so slow? Follwoing race won by a 3yo rated OR53 in 79.72s carrying 2lbs less than this winner. Middleham Park Racing gushing on their Website in the 'Sales' bit for the syndicate wrt Indie Banned = "he is ready to run. He works with a great attitude. His recent work has been with the 63 rated REASON TO BELIEVE, who is a 4yo. Our fella works better than this horse which is surprising given his lack of comparative maturity and experience. His weight for age allowance alone means his work is well in excess of a 63 rated individual. His current work suggests he is capable of an 80 type performance. With natural progress, who knows where he could end up." One slight problem with the summary is that it assumes Reason To Believe is really an OR63 horse. That figure he got for winning a weak handicap in Sept 2011 off OR58. 5 x unplaced runs for RTB in 2012 with the last being a well beaten 9th off OR58 in a Pro-Am race for Lady riders. Not really an 'OR63 horse' to judge the baseline against. He does look a solid, chunky sprinter on the pictures but what size, as in height? Trainer refers to him as 'Big' but this seems likely to be a common bit of misleading where some trainers refer to 'Big' meaning bulk and the horse can be any height and frame. A 'Fat Pony' one they would call 'Big'. Duffield pre-race on her blog = "We are back to Doncaster tomorrow [DPY] to resume our planned buying spree while the well liked newcomer Willie The Whipper makes his debut at Hamilton, but we can only hope he will handle the ground, he is joined by Oakbrook, but Hamilton must first pass an early morning inspection." Dark Marvel apparently attracted no bid at DBU. Video shows a competent breeze down the rail. Problem probably how small he looks on the video. Barely above rail height?, compact and looking mentally young and weak below. The type of 'scaper trainer Alan Berry seems to end up with as his career limps on. He ran 69 x 2yos in 2001 and this is his 2nd runner in 2012. DM by FSS Captain Marvelous who has had a single win in a dreaful seller and one small but precocious horse (Marvelino) rated OR70+ that trainer P Eddery has failed to ge tthe most out of before the precociousness advantage dribbles away. Stalls Centre and field raced centre. Stalls in centre because of going and clearly some discussion at track over whether racing should have gone ahead. MCaesar the best break and raced mostly seetled in the lead. Headed at 1F out and some response. Within 3-4L inside last 0.5F and jockey was trying to pull CM up. No obvious problem just miles clear in 2nd so trying to change his handicap mark. CM smaller than IBanned and compace. WTWhipper XNB and a bit free overall but mostly settled in race. Staying performance and more lengthy and lighter frame than other two males. Move ok and perhaps OR70ish. Indie Banned going ok downhill but faltering 2F out uphill and got unbalanced and then eased. Field finished well strung out in Centre track and adding to impression of a broken race in bad conditions and not 'form' easily transferrable to more normal set-ups. Race Conditions = "£5,000 guaranteed For 2yo which have never run and are E.B.F. eligible Weights colts and geldings 9st 3lb, fillies 8st 12lb Entries 14 pay £ 25 Penalty value 1st £3,234.50 2nd £962.50 3rd £481.00 4th £240.50" |
