SUMMARY
£10k Bonus Races.

Far, inner, Course in use. Surprising Going Report given how Soft the going at the Chester meeting (prev 3 days) had been and abandonments around the country. Drainage work over previous years affecting things that much? 22mm of rain on Weds and 5mm on Thur. Going Stick reading from 08:00am. Medium to Stiff WNW Wind = Direct Headwind.

Fahey on his SLife blog = "Euxton Hall goes well at home ahead of his racecourse debut at Haydock. A FTO 2yo on soft ground is always a worry but we think he'll handle it. He's a horse we like and should run a nice race.". What to make of that? Compulsory use of 'Nice' and 'Goes Well at Home' and managed not to add 'has done all I have asked of him'. Since they paid €80k for him they are not going to say anything other than 'they like him'. Sound a bit 'Ho-hum' and this just a Haydock start for a local owner who wants a runner here? The early runner equivalent of an expensive 'Day Out' for a suspect one at York next week for Ogden, or whoever? Euxton Hall is in Chorley near Wigan, the Hospital there is named after it, and the owner names all his horses after local streets, landmarks, etc. Or, an early start because it is a good one?

Note that jockey Hughes here to ride Annunciation and one other for the Hannon stable instead of 4 runners at ASCT. Work picture shows Annunciation ridden by Hughes at home and work video on MPR website shows him going well with the unraced 2yo - Red Refraction. Annunciation more mature mentally and going more easily but showing a competitive attitude trying to dominate the other horse.

Dascombe on the Morning Line and made Barracuda Boy his bet for the day citing the STO being an advantage in the ground. Interesting to note the regular cliche used was that the Haydock ground would be 'bottomless' as it was close to Chester where the CA4 MLine studio was. But, the reports from the course is saying GSS which would make it some of the firmest going around. Who's right?

First 6f race of the year with Goodwood abandoned earlier in the week. Mixed pace with a solid start then Kingscote on BB trying to hold his horse and settling the pace to halfway and the whole field within a visual 4L of the lead at that point. But, wound the pace up soon after halfway and that put enough pressure on the field to sort them out by ability and how they could handle the pace given hose knowing and ready they were. Overall a solid test despite the slow time and the first two horses to take seriosly going forward. As the first 6f race of the year also interesting to compare the types of horses that the trainers ran to the ideal 'Model' compared to their early 6f debuts in recent years.

Richard Fahey's recent Model for early 6f starts has been to run one at the York meeting (next Week) and then run a handful in the last week, or so, of the month. The York runner will be expensive and well bred but could be any quality. In 2010 the OR100+ Sir Reginald finished 2nd at York and in 2011 the expensive Giorgio's Dragon was a 'Day Out' for a season maiden and was unplaced. The late May group usually include a number of solid OR80+ types but they usually are not ready to win FTO and may be development types. With that model then what type is Euxton Hall? Is he a 'Day Out' for a local owner and if so what quality? Medium type with length and quite strongly made. Most striking thing about him is how relaxed and professional he is and always listening to the jockey and being helpful and composed. The race seemed to show him to be the solid OR85+ type and ready to run FTO. Travelled comfortably behind the pacemaker and took it up at 2F out without having to make an effort an just using his natural stride. Challenged towards the last 1F by a serious rival and a strong response. Well on top at the finish and still going forward. Likeable effort and can win at higher level and rate OR90+ and his professional nature a big help. Usual niggle about this being a staying effort but the way he travelled suggested he should be ok in 'speedier' test.

Positive view about the winner assisted by the positive view of the horse he dealt with in Annunciation. Look at Hannon's record with early 6f debuts and you can arrange the first 7-10 days around the 'Newbury' maiden at the end of next week. He usually starts the best he has (or best ready) at Newbury (Canford Cliffs, Strong Suit, etc) and they will often be Coventry Stakes runners. Since 2005 he has started just a handle of runners at 6F before Newbury. But, they have been a very consistent 'Type' with all having been season winners and all, but one, OR84+ raters. All but one have placed FTO at 6f which means that Annunciation running here ought to conform to a real 'Type' if you go looking for info about him. In this case the Internet had a lot of useful info on it which showed that Annunciation should certainly be 'as advertised'. Look at his 1yo picture and 'So What' and he would need to develop well to be the Hannon 'Type'. Look at his syndicate owners website and they have a wealth of useful pictures and videos of how well he has developed. Grown enough and got strong build with it and notably mature mentally and a dominant personality. Videos also useful in showing the background prep and work at Hannon's yard including introductory stalls works. Also interesting to see the Hannon horses wearing number cloths at work which you do not see elsewhere. Also a positive that Hughes rode him at work and riding him here.

Hughes in 'teach to settle' mode and dropped Annunciation in and the horse fought this a little bit for 1.5F before settlling. Along with the winner the horse that cruised through after BB upped the pace and closed up to EH towards the last 1F. Unable to quite match EH's effort but drew clear with him and a very good first run. Ought to be the OR85+ type for Hannon. Also interesting to think that Hannon presumably has something better for Newbury. His entries are Black Monk (STO, who is 'Bunce' not 'Strong Suit' like Annunciation is at least 'Tishtar'), Mister Marc (entered in various races since early season), Mysterial (STO after a green debut at NMKT) and the unraced pair Royal Challis & The Taj. The last of those perhaps most interesting as one of the Hamdan Al Maktoum 2yos that Hannon has in his first season training for this important owner.

Mick Channon's early 6f debuts seem to rarely include 'better types' and the odd better ones probably go to Newbury. The others tend to Top Out at being just above Open Maiden winner entry level and a number can be eternal placers below that cut-off mark. Luhaif expensive for a nothing pedigree but a smaller one in the group and a bit green. Unable to go with the quality of the first two and plugged on to a remote third. Looks to fit into the OR71-76 range and another to suggest that the 'Shape' of the finish (two clear of a probable Changeover Point around the 3rd) might well be 'real'.

Linda Stubbs a rare early 6F debut and the last one won a division of this race in 2009 thanks to a 'Pace War' having been well back. That one not really OR70s and a 'lucky' win. Gold Beau a good size but looked a slower galloper and presumably starting at 6f at the earliest opportunity because of that. Trainer will find something to win with GB in the North.

Barracuda Boy ran better than the final result shows and a big & strong type who should rate OR80+. Ran too free in the conditions and did not stay. But applied the pressure that stretched the field out and would have been a solid 3rd if he had not failed to stay. Perhaps go back to 5F but solidly above Open Maiden class in the right set-up.

Barry Hills pattern for early 6f debuts was not to have very many. The place to be looking for his better types at 6F starts would be late May into early June. Just a handful of debuts before that period in recent years and a mix of types. The two better types started at Newbury & York. He also started two lesser ones at Newbury in 2011. His last early starter to run here was Atacama Crossing who finished 2nd and proved an OR70s Nursery type. Which suggests the early 6f runners really are what has shown up as being ready rather than being a set 'Type' like Hannon. Red Dragon expensive purchase out of a useful dam who has been disaapointing as a dam so far. Medium size and ok build & balance. Given a typically non-involving ride by jockey Hills who, after all these years riding, still lets things 'happen to him' rather than taking control of situations. Hard to judge RD because a bit green but the effort he produced towards 2F out not that good and laboured. Perhaps not handling the conditions but not obvious he is going to snap together into a STO Maiden winner. Probably one to let go STO.

Mark Prescott has a very structured approach to his 2yos and tends to batch then up in various ways and the Earliest batches, and part of some batches, tend to have the competitive ones. The trainer normally starts with a few nippy 5f tpyes before the 6F debuts start. This a notable early run at 6F and the natural wuestion is why? Small one for an owner breeder trying to get a win before things get too tough? Better natural who should compete well FTO? Oasis Cannes a solid size and build so not the small one. Mixed pedigree by a sprinter out of a stout dam who has produced slower & development runners so far. Too green and hanging early and late here and an early fade. Some sort of OR70s but should improve notably STO if he reappears soon. Trainer such a thorough Front-Loader that this has to be a usable one.

Windhoek declared for abandoned Goodwood 6f race and an NR here. Mark Johnston early 6F debuts mostly made up of a mix of ordinary types around Open Maiden class with some a bit over OR75 with development and a good number of non-maiden winners, nursery types and development types. The odd better type mixed in usually show it FTO. The better types used to be one a York that often blew out before improving and then at Ripon (next weekend). That pattern seems to be less obvious and the one good one in the early batch in 2011 won this race as his first 6F runner before the normal set followed.
