S from SHV 2 days prior with Going Stick reading from 08:30am. Dry since previous Fri evening after 38mm on Mon-Fri. Stiff to Strong SW wind = Half Headwind from the Right. Unusual Result at the Trainer Level since Chris Fairhurst has had 35 juveniles debuts since start 2002 before this one for a single place (back in 2004) and two 4ths. All other 32 behind halfway in their fields and most well beaten at the back of the ruck. What happened here? Poppy Bond a slow start and 10L adrift after about 1F which clearly suggests the leaders went too hard. But, if that were the only reason then Hellolini ran very well and why was Mount Seymour unable to close up having been 4.5L off the lead at halfway? One of those mixed answers and, as is usually the case when a trainer who 'never' has a FTO winner has one, PB must have some solid natural ability relative to the level. The vast majority of his other debuts still wouldn't have won this even if the leaders had gone completely berserk, for example. Odd race to get a handle on the quality with the time similar to the pair of early April races but with the Going Stick 2.0 notches slower (a large amount) and a headwind here compared to a tailwind then. Also more weight carried here. Time also stands up against the older horse seller which was the next race. The early April auction race included the Lily Agnes winner although clearly running well below her later level at NMKT & CHES. But, this a lower level group on profile and most OR50-60s and looking for odd OR70s ability. Winner cannot give away 10L and rate highly for the day. UPDATE = trainer Fairhurst quotes from the day = "We thought she had a lot of ability but she's been slow out of the stalls at home and I thought she'd probably blow her chance at the start. She was slow away and she's done well to win, so we're delighted. She'll learn to break better with a bit more practice, but I don't like to do it too much with them at home as they get sick of it. We'll see how she comes out of it before making any plans." Liber the second of the initial batch of Prescott debuts and this batch will typically be mostly season winners, most on either STO or 3TO, and only the better types able to win FTO in a solid race. This not a solid race on profile and Liber took ages to haul himself past the leader before being headed late by the winner racing well wide of him. Looks just the typical later OR60s into OR70s of a competitive 2yo Prescott has selected to run early. Improve to STO but not a better type on this and going xlose to winning would seem to point to a moderate to average race for the course.. Hellolini ran well fromn the lead and tried hard to see off the others but fading in the last 0.5f. Presume later OR60s. Relight My Fire again looking to lack the pace for 5F even in 'staying' conditions and plugging on for a bit in the last 2F before fading later on. Hard to see how he can win with that style allied to his basic ability level. Roland more interesting and a smaller type with some length but a heavy build and ok deep front. Did not look fit enough FTO because of his build and better here. Looks like a usable development type for a faster going sprint nursery. Ok off OR65, for example, with another run or two. Moss Quito less interesting and a bit on the small side and fading earlier here. Competent trainer tends to get uncompetitive debuts and develo-with-racing types if they are going to win. So, should improve but not one to follow on the base starting point here and the size. Mount Seymour seemed in a funny mood overall and this included planting and spinning in front of the stalls at post and having to be led behind by a handler. Oddly, he walked into the stalls with no problem. But, never really going forward in the race and not responding to the later race urgings and jockey seemed to accept this and eased him later on. Showed low level form LTO when plugging on from off a stiff pace and unable to be encouraged to do that here. Gelded before he ever ran and a 50-50 call as to which way he will go attitude wise on this effort. |
