GGS from SGS 2 days prior. Going Stick Reading from 08:30am. Chance of Showers during the day and only 11 degrees C. Strong mostly Northerly Wind = Crosswind from the Right. Wind reportedly strong and very Gusty. Visual impression of race on Video of more than usual number of horses not looking that balanced and normal reason is the ground. Suspect here that the Wind played a part. Perhpas played a part in Panama Cat getting unbalanced and dropping Spencer. Jockey on EMBlanco also unbalanced and up the the horse's neck soon after the start but 'fell' back into the saddle rather than over the top as with Spencer. Certainly not the Easterbys' fault that the race did not get divided. Jockeys for MWE = COT (Aspell), HHGAM (A7) & EMB (O'Sullivan, dec for abandoned meeting last week). Jockeys for TDE = Rat Catcher (Allan), Crystal Cove (Gibbons riding rather than any of MWE's, 1st Colours for Habton) & CHart (Fentiman). They have done ok in the Draw lottery as well with 5 of their 6 in the lowest 6 draws. Race completely split into two groups after 2F with first 7 through halfway within 5L of lead then a break of 6L back to the front edge of the 8th+ through. TNT 7th & 5L off lead after 2F but already switching left to centre track (leeward) and good progress to be in 2nd place in the leading line as the efforts started 2F out Time slow compared to handicap 2 races later won in 65.17s by OR69 5yo carrying 2lbs less. Interesting race on profile if lacking the OR100+ type the winner in the last two seasons has been. This race produced a moderate elevel of performance and an interesting example to see whether looking for future winners in this type of race that useful. Is the form so low level that any 'promise' is not going to translate to even average quality maidens. Some horses to track highlighted below along with more general notes. Top Notch Tonto a similar example to a trainer who 'never ' has a FTO winner having one. Trainer McInnes has a poor record with 2yos but the winners tend to hint strongly at some natural ability FTO or STO then win NTO. TNT an eyecatching run in a similar race here LTO to an ok 4th. Interesting ride by his jockey here who launched his effort by halfway wide out as the leading group were jogging through the mid race section. Good response from TNT which meant he was in the leading line at 2F out and able to make another effort from there. Nursery type and lower to mid OR70s galloper. Pearl Noir an NR last week and the second ever 2yo runner for his young trainer. The first won on debut and this one 2nd despite some lack of nous. But trainer clearly has them solidly ready FTO and has chosen the competitive ones to run first. Has he any more usable ones? PN one to track as a probable future winner. Did not go like a 5F horse here and a taller and narrower type in the group. But, probably the strongest staying on finish and ok promise for a 6f low level win. Trainer Johnston in a period which in 2011 he used to run a set of good ones on debut including FTO wins. Early May this year not been the same and the Batch (nte how he batches the good ones) of better ones this year so far have been the two FTO wins on the same day in early March. Fraserburgh not a 5f pedigree and another taller and lighter type. Just a so-so debut and perhaps around OR70 and not a certain maiden winner and perhaps poor value STO. Fly Fisher a limited OR60s nursery type lacking size and scope and in three runs has presumably shown what he can so. Which means he finds better horses than him even in lesser northern maidens. Bring on the nurseries. More interest in Crystal Cove who travelled like the most natural sprinter in the field. Another lacking scope but a notch bigger than FF and low OR70s. Too fizzy on debut to see the 5F out and again leading here but more controlled. Still 2nd to the 0.5F mark before a strong fade hid that. One that ought to win given a faster 5F test than he has found so far. Big gap back from the 5th and the wisdom of rummaging around in the adrift group comes into play. No real interest in Strasbourg Place who was an NR from Chester last week. Competent from a wide draw and a bit green but no strong promise. More interest in Rat Catcher who was ridden by jockey Allan rather than CCove and perhaps riding for an owner as the stable jockey rather than one of the two that are trainer family owned. Ok size in this group and solid mover and flashy type by sire. Ran moderately and a toss-up as to whether that was unwillingness or nervousness to press on through being green. Inclined to give him a chance to blossom STO. Probably a seller winner in the Easterby set in the adrift group and Chiming Hart perhaps showed enough for that and you wonder about whether one of the Mick Easterby trio is being set up for a punt at the Rous Seller at York. Perhaps Hashegotanymoney the dark horse in that 3-horse race or did the fact that EMB got into the faders despite being well adrift at halfway confirm his 'first string' billing?. But, the other really intersting horse in the ruck is Yorkshire Icon. All Mick Channon breeding but he was the underbidder for this Sixties Icon and let it go to another trainer. The dam has produced two low level (OR50s into OR60s) winners but the pictures on YIcon seem to suggest a solidly usable 2yo. Deep bodied and compact type of sire with ok build and attititude. Brief work Video clip shows him going ok as well. Another, like Rat Catcher who seemd to get stagefright on the day to the point of not looking that willing. But, another to check for doing much better STO at a value price in the right set-up given that the form is a rancid 11th of 13 to the general view. So, assuming Panama Cat is usable otherwise Spencer would not have come to ride fro Ryan and the Elite Racing Club can the field produce 5-6 subsequent winners? Or, is it moderate form that should not be delved into much? |
