SUMMARY
GSG and the same as 2 days prior with 4mm of rain late Mon and 1mm overnight. Going Stick reading from 09:30am. Light to Medium Westerly Wind = Half Headwind for first 3F then a direct Headwind to the finish.

Meehan's website wrt Lobelia = "Lobelia starts at a low level in this auction race. ... but inexperience as ever is an issue for a Manton debutante.". Never mind 'Choose Life what about 'Choose inexperience'.

Charlie Hills on his weekly blog = "At Bath in the evening Lucky Beggar goes. He's been in good form since his Newmarket run and should give a good account of himself."

Low level performance and slower times on day and compare 3yo handicap won in 64.09s by OR63 carrying 13lbs more than RM. But, a race full of 'characters' both historical and now. Trainer Hannon has a terrific record getting wins from 'cheap ones' and his record with runners under 5k guineas since 2006 is 7 season winners from 17 individual runners. For the same period the range between 5k to 10k has produced 29 season winners from 54 individuals. Wherever you look in the Hannon record they are managing to find, and produce through training, competitive juveniles and putting them in the right races to win. Rebel Magic was retained for just £1,000 at the sales. Her dam was retained for 2,400gns and the trainer won with her as a 2-3yo rating later 60s into 70s at best. THis one perhaps a notch lower but similar ORs. Trainer said this on his website afterwards = "I had the dam, Aastral Magic, and she won first time out, too. This one was just warming up at the end, so we will be looking to step her up to six furlongs."

Another regualr 2yo racing 'Character' with Lucky Beggar. The OR75-83 type that Barry, and now Charlie, runs in early season but takes time to win is a season staple. LB a shorter and heavy build one and a NR in the Chester maiden last week. Which is a race the stable has failed to win since 2005 with several placed since of the same mould. Dropped to an Auction race because of the lower price LB cost it was hard to see what would prevent this one winning earlier than usual. But the Hannon 'Character' popped up on the line to do it. Indicative of the quality level LB can run to at present. This type tend to improve notably after mid-season and probably one to support if it hints at that later season blossoming than if it goes again soon at a short SP in a maiden.

Marchwood a solid size but not a god mover and does not produce much of a kick in the last 2f. Has an OR60s level of ability but trainer Moore can take a long time to get a win with this type and would not be a big surprise to see him breaking his maiden on the AW in late season or perhaps after the turf season has closed. Indicative of the trainer having to wait until he can find a soft race to win rather than being able to engineer wins as Hannon can.

By contrast trainer Meehan has a moderate record with 'Cheap Ones' as his career has developed into more elevated funding levels. His record with those that cost leas than 10,000gns since 2006 is 1 winner from 11 individuals. The low number telling you this is not the level he seems to want to operate at. Lobelia reatined for £500 so presumably Meehan is only training it because owner Buckley is a friend of the stable. Smaller and lightly made as you would expect. Attended the pace ok but too green and lacking umph to mount an effort int he last 2f. Looks OR50s and Meehan will have to work to find a soft race to win.

trainer Saunders finds at least one 2yo winner each year and a filly developing to win 3-4TO would be typical. Baltic Gin never put into the race on debut here (NPIR) but asked to do more here. Another to be unable to mount any worthwhile challenge in the last 2f. Seems unlikely she is the development winner for the trainer on this effort.

Schottische runs for a trainer who gets development Nursery winners who have their ability masked on earlier runs. This one another cheap sales retainee and seems to have an attitude problem to go with low ability. Loose TP and awkward and niggled along during the race and hanging and not looking that user friendly. No interest.

Honey Haven another really cheap one in a cast of characters which seemed unlikely to put up a rep to defeat LB. Small and limited to go with being green and no interest.

More interest in Devout who cost more money and although smalle and compact (sire type) has some build positive. Stouter dam does not suggest 5f is her game either. Interesting because she is one of 4 juveniles ATR are following as part of a set of features on developing 2yos with Jamie Osborne as the subjest. Some quotes from Osborne, from memory, about Devout from the first piece = "Not very big, wide as she is tall and not going to get any bigger. Lively character, not a problem but you have to let her have her way. Hoped she would be out earlier but wet ground because she is not going to improve with time. Think she is a good buy as a 2yo."

So, a smaller one with a 6f+ pedigree but has to get going early so why not try 5f. Showed some of the lively character with some tail flashing after the break perhaps in response to being squeezed out by two of the other runners. Since she may not be a 5F filly then why not give her an 'educational intro'? Which the jockey did, with knobs on. Never tried to get her involved and let her drift back several times before halfway. Trundling along in 6th with the two who had got loose TP behind her into the last 0.5f and the jockey still managed to ease her to 8th. Clearly just a development run and STO will presumably show more of what she is capable of. Probably 6f.
