£10k Bonus Race. Previous Day's race hinted at Centre-FarSide being better than stands' side strip. Good going here and Goink Stick 0.1 firmer. Field Grouped up on stands' rail for this race from Centre Track Stalls. Widest runner through to halfway was Artigiano and probably running on the far edge of the Centre to Stands side strip that looked the start of the usable strip the day before. Difficult race to think of in CP-GG terms with the first 4 clear and a 10 length Gap back to the 5th+ finishers. Which is not a sensible shape. The leading 4 all ought to be OR84+ but the rest cannot all be as bad as the result suggests - i.e. Seller & OR60s at best. Another race at the course which did not play out, break apart, in an obviously sensible manner which sends you looking for external factors rather than just believing the horses. Look for reasons for the 10L gap and the Stiff Pace on the ground seems a definite factor. The first three home were 4L, 3.5L and 6.2L off the lead at halfway. Star Of Rohm did best of the 'Pace' in that sense at 2.5L. But, except Artigiano, there were visibally travelling best at halfway. Racing close to the rail perhaps another negative and Star Of Rohm again again did best of those with the other three being 3 of the 4 widest runners. Star Of Rohm probably needs marking up and a well above average debut for him by the trainer's standards and the SP misleading. The two Johston horses (Birdy Boy & Skytrain) barrelling along prominently in this race then fading badly is a regular occurence in this race so that explains that pair. Johnston 'Lost Debuts' in this race can develop to be 'anything from OR60s to Listed winners. What of the rest behind? Was the 10L a bit exaggerated but a real reflection that race had enough 'pressure' in it to split out the Open Maiden winners, and better, from the sub-OR75s? But enough pressure to break those lesser ones early. Seems unlikely and 'something' should have been in the 10L gap. Red Paladin 20/1 but ridden by Ryan stable jockey Makin. Spencer on Glory Awaits. Trainer used to start very good ones in the race and has won it with FTOs. But recent runners less good and last year's 3rd - Tortoni - struggles along afterwards and ended the season as an OR70 placer. RPaladin an ok size and raced prominently and stands side. Still able to raise some effort before getting unbalanced and one to check STO. Glory Awaits too stupid and wound up to show anything and whether the 10/1 was just 'Spencer booking taking the eye' reaction by the Market or something real. Tim Easterby runs a mix of types in the race but they have included some OR80+ ones although even they finish unplaced like Captain Dunne and Mariachi Man. He ran two in 2011 who both ended the season maidens. Allan rode Wynyard Boy and Fentiman If You Can for an owner who likes a runner in the race. WB showed more but also a knee action and perhps a 7f+ nursery developer. Bispham Green mildly talked up by the trainer but just a neat, medium one, and did nothing here to support an upside view unless the later race hanging was a stopper. One to watch rather than expect a blossoming. Which means that a view of the race as just the best 4 horses, and notably better if not 10L better, drew clear correctly and issues like pressing the pace on debut, greenness and unready-on-debut trainer MOs did for any with Open Maiden potential behind. Dust Whirl removed from the issue because he should have finished with the front 4 but had some physical problem on the day. Jockey looking down 1.5F out so hopefully not an injury. Go looking for some Open Maiden potential in the stragglers and the better one of the Ryan & Johnston pairs the best places to look. WB might be a nursery type for Easterby. BG let go. Charlie Hills on May 21st = "Funk Soul Brother has been the apple of owner/breeder Phil Cunningham's eye since he was born and he made a very pleasing debut success at York. He's pleased us from the word go and although he was ready for the race the experience will have only done him good. All roads lead to Ascot and the Coventry now." |
