£10k Bonus Race Stalls Centre Track. Medium Easterly Wind = Direct Tailwind. Meehan's website - "Both colts should similarly improve for the outing." Hannon Website after the race about Mysterial = "Mysterial was an expensive odds-on failure for the Highclere team in the opening two-year-old race at Newbury on Friday, finishing only third behind 40-1 shot Sir Patrick Moore, having been switched inside the furlong-pole and come home in style. 'They won't beat Mysterial again,' predicted Richard Hannon, and Harry Herbert, boss of Highclere, has not given up hopes of making Royal Ascot, though he asked the boss to look for a maiden en route. Reflecting on the defeat, Richard Hughes said: 'Maybe I should have let him roll as they went no pace, but I was keen to get him to learn something. At half-way you would have thought you were riding a first-time out two-year-old - he was clueless. But if I had allowed him his head from the start here I suspect he would have gone backwards mentally. He did learn plenty, and hopefully he can make it third time lucky.' " Field raced centre track from centre stalls placement. Slow pace and a lot of held horses and pulling from early on. Halfway positions to final placings tell a lot of the Pace story with first 7 home including 6 who were in the first 6 from an early stage plus Mysterial. But, although closing from 9th at halfway that horse still only around 3L off the lead and the field spread over not much more than 5L front to back anyway. But clearly a race where if you were a lesser type or very green and got even mildly behind you would have to be well above OR75 talented to make strong progress in the late race sprint. A maiden that often divides and usually has one Group winner in the overall field (Hannon provided usually and in 2009-11 it has been Canford Cliff, Strong Suit & Trumpet Major). There is often a Group placer type who finishes close up as well. There will then be a sprinkling of Open Maiden winners and half the field probably non-winners. On Profile this did not look a strong edition and not helped by Hannon only running one horse. The 'Shape' of this field with the Hannon STO runner odd-on and nothing else at less than 12/1 tends to support the lower quality Profile view. A 40/1 winner from a smaller stable followed by a 12/1 smaller but ready Channon type in 2nd not reading like a strong renewal and a 66/1 2nd string in 4th out of an old dam who has only produced one winner in the last 8 years doesn't sound 'right' either. That 4th at the front of the midfield ruck who finished in a heap with a few stragglers behind. The front three did pull clear of the ruck suggesting they have 'something' a bit better but still showing ordinary maiden form on the day. The Mysterial Story is told above in the Hannon quote. They clearly still think he is 'the one' as the 6f Group prospect at present. Although green your instinct says a 'Group' winner, certainly a Canford Cliffs or Strong Suit should have shown more in 2 runs and found a way to win on ability. Already an expensive horse to follow though and see whether he can stand the Hype up 3TO. Does Hannon really not have any others he could have run in the race, even as support to Mysterial? Note that the two unraced colts he had entered were The Taj & Royal Challis. Sir Patrick Moore & Pay Freeze unconvincing as better class types and more ready OR80s naturals. Pay Freeze smaller and SirPM shorter but heavy build. All adding to a the questions over the race quality. Anything to pick out of the ruck to follow? There will be a few Maiden winners but a few to check. Knight Charm a solid size and by the sire Haafhd that the trainer has had multiple winners by in the last 2 seasons. The worst puller in the race but still made a forward effort to 3rd before fading. Note that the trainer's 2yos often, usually in 2011, fail to progress STO before developing 3TO+. Should be ok to follow in the right set-up. Secret Symphony a good size but an immature attitude on the day. Another trainer who gets development winners but has had a poor record with 2yos in the last 3 years. Not good for Hannon's son-in-law. But, an interesting one to follow for a better run at a long SP somewhere.More speculative but Gold Roll another of a similar type to check for development after a green effort here. Cappadocia produced less of an effort after travelling ok and that might have been just lesser ability. But, see whether he drops to 5f at a lesser track STO. On the negative Bix at a shorter SP and showed nothing after a slow break. Smaller one and seems one to oppose in future Check how all that goes by season end. |
