£10k Bonus Race. G from GF after 9mm of rain overnight and 5mm of watering on Thursday. Going Stick from 07:15am. Medium Northerly Wind = Quarter Tailwind from the Right. Average Pace with field wide spread. Winner leading in Centre Track before halfway with 3 attenders from Lower draws and Annunciation tacking over from Stands Side to join this line on inner edge. Closers that finished 3rd to 5th from higher draws and 2.5L to 4.5L back of lead at halfway. Big Field and presumably partly because of £10k bonus. But a remarkably unbalanced one in quality terms. Reckless Abandon a typical strong debut performance for trainer Cox these days and won despite running a bit free and green when in front and stopping. Almost baulked and unseated the jockey near the line. Trainer Cox interviewed afterwards and seemed totally unsurprised by the solid win and jockey Kirby now his choice for the better ones with Robinson retired. No surprise to see RA try Listed+ level. Annunciation dropped to 5f and giving 3lbs to the winner. Solid effort but 5f not an obvious move. Solid effort to get clear of the ruck and probably beaten by an OR85+ going on to better races. The Changeover Point is right behind them and an argument over whether you get to the Garbage Gap before the 3rd home. The Black Jacobin an ok size in his pictures but keeps attracting very low or no bids at the sale. As if he has some defect which stops him even making the 5k range. Might be OR60s usable. Therapeutic the 3rd FTO for new trainer and they have all been for the family by their sire Milk It Mick. The three have run 1st, 2nd and 4th in a big field here so trainer Dixon is picking out the usable ones and front-loading them and preparing them well for debut. Presumably he will be into the Duff ones soon and a question over whether he has anything better to come out later. Another perhaps ok OR60s but into the OR50s to low 60s behind that and then a long tail of bad efforts. Presumably most of those are real but there might be the odd Auction winner in the ruck along with the odd seller type. Any clues? Obvious source with Monkey Bar Flies who ran better than 6th sounds producing a real effort to get to 3rd before fading. Check whether Dha Chara ever loks likely to stay 5f in nurseries. Update - This Taken from Mark Johnston's 'Bletherings' pages on his website. This the Entry for May 20th = "This morning we took six two-year-olds to gallop at Haydock on their newly refurbished track. I was most impressed. It looks in terrific condition and, despite the wettest spring in my memory it was remarkably good ground. I walked the track after the gallop and, although I could see each footprint, there were no divots turned over. On closer inspection I could put my finger about two inches into the toe of each hoofprint. I asked how Haydock would describe this ground and I was told it was Good-Soft. This is in stark contrast to the ground at Doncaster last night where the horses were turning over great clods of earth and returning with mud up above their fetlocks. It was certainly much softer than the Haydock ‘Good-Soft’ ground and yet it was described as ‘Good’. Surely we can devise a simple system based on analysis of times, wind, finishing positions and other objective parameters to assess the true state of the ground after a race meeting. Then, when certain Clerks of the Course are found to consistently mislead us on the true state of the ground and/or mismanage the racecourse (e.g. by watering when the ground is already softer than optimum and rain is forecast), the management should be penalised." |
