Medium NW wind.

Notably quick time with only five times faster by a juvenile since the track opened. Those five in the range 58.84s to 59.8s and all at October meetings in the years 2007-9. Note that those October winners a range of quality but include to OR60s nursery winners to act as a reminder how track conditions and weather can influence the times run. This faster than any time since October 2009. Fastest times in earlier season since the course opened in 2006 have been Boomerang Bob (60.88s on May 2nd in 2011) & Star Rover's 61.21s on March 29th in 2009. Both that pair rated OR100+ at 2yo with the first Group placed and the second a Listed winner.

Typical race shape in terms of Halfway positions to final placings but unusual method to get to the halfway positions. With Marvelino held up and some slower starts inside the trio drawn 7, 9 & 10 from wide out able to jog through to the leading pair and the 4th place at halfway who was on the outside of Marvelino (rail) jockey had held him back to allow the XFs. BJubilee initially in the lead but then CKisses forced on from wide to go to the lead and 1.5L clear at halfway and running at least 2 Lanes off the rail with nothing inside of her.

BJubilee - early debuts win for Johnston and followed by another at EDIN 35 minutes later. Horses more forward or a batch of better quality ones who can win FTO. Inclined to value the second explanation more and that today's two debut wins were better types. Track had clearly been prepared to be quick for a valuable day's racing and the 16f track record was lowered (by higher quality horses than usually run at the course - and who had been fingered as 'non progressive' by Dave Nevision. RUK spent 5 minutes listening to Nevison's spurious guesses rather than showing the 2yos in the Parade Ring.... will they ever learn). BUT, still a strong time even shiting it back a bit for fast conditions and BJubilee seemed to show the ability to kick twice and make 2L both time before and after 1F out. Very willing, but controlled, attitude and real natural pace and showed something a little different. Ought to be Listed class to past mid-season and quality a big part of the Johnston FTO.

Marvelino got a good tow into the race but blown away by the winner and raised less of an effort than Mosstang and only got to second by wearing that one down. Solid effort without showing anything to stand up the favourite tag on debut and somwhere around a Changeover Point type and size makes you wonder about the scope to develop, unless the front of this race better than it has been rated.

Good debut from Mosstang showing natural pace and ok size. Ran wider on the bend than Marvelino and raised a better effort than that one until getting tired in the last 0.5f. Ought to be OR75+ and probably OR80+.

Trainer Hannon used to bring some of his best early types to Kempton but none since 2007 when Listed winner Fat Boy won a slow race here FTO. Market would suggest they thought Lyric Ace was back at that class rather than the OR80 type who might be conditions race quality. As with a number in the field he got hampered by the wide runners cutting across to lead and then started hanging on the bend. On the plus side he did make some ground in the straight against horses running fast times and didn't stop. But, looked more the OR80s nippy early one that might have a go in the Woodcote along the way before being in nurseries in later season (rather than the Zebedee or MR Chevalier end of the early debuts).

CKisses the 5th debut for Bill Turner this year and the 4th to lead at halfway. 3 of those have now faded to 4-5th and one hung on to win a poor seller just holding off a rabbit closer who had been 6L down at halfway. His other debut winner went the opposite way from 5th at halfway to win. How ready are his debuts? CK a somewhat skinny type although with some size and showed pace to make the race and went a bit too hard in front. No development potential and very fit here but has ok prospects to find a sub OR75 race early to win.

LVBlack one of four debuts for Dascombe to date and the see-saw balance of halfway to finish position shows up the other way to Turner. Three of the four have been 6-7th through halfway and none have lost places to the finish and two have trundled into 2nd/3rd at the prominent racers faded. The one to have pressed the pace in 2nd ended up 7th at the finish. Are his horses ready yet for strong debuts? LVB somewhat narrow bodied and looked to lack the pace for this at times although another hampered early on. Sub OR75 and perhaps OR68-70 type with development.

CIcon made a little ground from being allowed to get adrift but only into the stragglers and faders. Trainer typically starts home-bred claimer level plus the odd OR70-73 season winner in these KTNA early race typically. CIcon somehwere in the middle of that range on this effort.

Hats Off a bulky type and looks the part but ran disappointingly. A horse you want to be positive about but need to be wary about using the possible excuses to blind yourself. Is he a pretty boy who is actually slow? A slow start and then cut off and hampered by the crossers and generally looking green and as if this was all a bit of a surprise to him through the race. Ran a bit wide on the bend as well. On the other side nothing happened when he was asked to make an effort in the straight (unlike Lyric Ace, for eg). He looked heavy and not moving his bulk that well. But, definitely needs to be given another chance to tighten up and show improved form STO. But have a good look to check he is not just strong and slow. [Trainer's Video Blog on April 9th summary = A bit disappointed in Hats Off's run, Surprise how green he was because he had been straightforward at home. Jockey Morris had to chase him along all the way around the bend. They thought he would need further but still disappointed overall. Said they would try him on a straight track on turf STO and then see where to go from there. Best expected him to 'come on bundles' for the FTO run which is his usual phrase. The comment about needing further is interesting in that in the home straight HOff seemed to lengthen his stride rather than show a sprinter's snap and was unable to make any ground in a fast race.]

Fortinbrass appears to be 'as advertised'. A neat, smaller LM sprinter and typical of his sire. Will be a nursery type and sub OR75 in the long term and perhaps need to drop to Auction race to compete for an early win. Another slow start, hanging on the bend and then producing nothing in the straight. An OR75+ type ought to show up better FTO for Beckett unless he is behind schedule this year. Seems more likely this one is lower quality end of his early starters.

Modern Society as oddly marked as you would expect from his novelty sire. You imagine someone as 'individual' as trainer Reid bought him to stand out as much as anything. MS Looking heavy and not fit enough here and ran like that. On the plus side there is some solid bulk to him so he has some scope to develop. But, since the trainer only seems to get winners over 5-6f and on the AW with 2yos you wonder whether he will be able to direct that scope to develop accurately.
