GSS from GSG 2 days prior after 9mm of rain on Fri-Sat night. Going Stick reading from 06:00am. Stalls Stands' Side. Medium NW breeze = Half Headwind from the Right. 2.29s slower than the preceding 2yo maiden with this winner carrying 3lbs less. Very Slow Times and Notably poor quality level.. Race led through halfway by Tiger Sunset & Red Koko who have both proved short runners over 5f in faster conditions. Why step either of them up to 6f in testing conditions? First seller available? That pair always going to collapse and leave a slow-motion contest in the last 1.5F of small, poor quality, horses rolling around and trying not to run straight. OOTB looked small and unwilling in 2 previous races and what would possess anyone to back him at odds-on? The sort of favourite that 'something' will nearly always turn over because they set such a poor form quality level. How can the winner be worth £13,500 and OOTB £6,000. What Magic Potions must they have to apply? But, worth noting some points about the Bill Truner stable at this point. While you can niggle about the things he does wrong he does graft away and get solid results within his own framework. To this point in the season he had run 8 x 2yos and this win for Captain Blue meant that all 8 were now winners. Think about that compared to a trainer like Brendan Powell who has managed a single 2yo win from around 43 individual juveniles in the last 10 years. Or a number of other examples. Difficult to argue with Turner on that level. Also worth noting that his A7 grandson rode both winners on the day and has only won on Turner 2yos for his 5 career wins. Bill's daughter and the jockey's mother led the horses up. Not many jockeys get patted on the head and a kiss from the 'Lass', 'aah Mum..'. Also worth noting that Turner uses apprentices on nearly all his 2yos. With well schooled horses this is probably not far from 'Free weight concession' with many 2yo races proving very simple affairs with a few competitive horses and straight tracks. This jockey looks sort of 'ok' when he sits still and does nothing but very untidy and unbalanced when he tries to move. Which means he is often sitting motionless trying not to fall off while the jockeys around him are doing the 'expected' bouncing around the audience is taught to expect in Britain. A good case can be made that the 'norm' is inefficient. If you believe that and that the Horse, not the jockey, is the important factor then watching this Apprentice getting carried to wins by not getting in the horse's way while it is doing the job of going from A to B done seems good evidence. |
