Medium to a bit over Northerly Wind = Half Tailwind from Left in Back Straight, Crosswind on bend and a Half Headwind from the Left in the Home Straight. Baker on his Blog wrt Bountybeamadam = "She has been working well, and I hope for an encouraging start.". Contentless but at least avoided 'nice'. Stiff pace and 7L back from 2nd to 3rd. That partly explained by the first two home probably being the best horses but the shape of the race made the gap as big as 7L. Race split into 'Two' from early on with the leading five within 2L of each other and pressing on and then a 4L+ Gap back to the straggling 5 before halfway and that group a mix of green and under pressure. Mavelino, who had a back shoe removed before the race in the saddling box then gave trouble at the stalls, a comfortable run on the rail and London Citizen behind him. The other three in the leading group racing off the rail including Ace Pearl who is smaller and compact and a step up to 6F not looking a good move and unable to stretch out in the straight to go with the other leaders. Big gap back to him because he is limited. Different story with Stupenda & Hasopop who were both given remarkably attacking rides for 2yos on debut. Jockeys forcing them into the pace and to run prominently by making ground wide into, and around, the bend. Both were always going to fade off that pressure and wide running. Stupenda the first runner of the season for meticulous trainer Coakley and his initial runner in both 2010 & 2011 won FTO. Front-loading and having runners 'Ready FTO' a key part of his MO. Stupenda another good buy and a smaller, strong barrel with some length and a mature attitude. Solid effort in the atraight until the earlier exertions told. Hasopo an oddity in starting as favourite. Trainer Botti used to be a 'Ready FTO' trainer but that has almost entirely gone way in recent years. Which made Hasopop winning FTO seem unlikely unless he was very good. He was bought at the Breeze sale at the track in early April and the video of that breeze would leave you more baffled by the overall punt on him. What can he have been showing at home? The VT shows a smaller on making a so-so breeze, getting unbalanced at times and not finishing the final 1F ot the 2F breeze off. He only cost £11,000 so no-one though much of the breeze at the time. Running wider then Stupenda and unable to match her response in the straight and 'gone' by 1F out. Why the punt, again? Trainer Elaine Burke had lots of strong debuts and FTO wins in 2011 in her 1st full season. The debuts to date have been so-so and London Citizen a good effort to overhaul a solid 'Marker' horse like Marvelino. When Karl held the licence (still the assistant so presumably is doing a lot of the 'training' & decision making) the stable used to have a few early runners and then the stable would get into gear from late May onwards when the wins would start. A batch of strong debuts in Late May to early June used to be common. Path of the 'Burke' stable this year seems to be on that old path. Worth watching for other better debuts in the next 2 weeks and for the return of STO Letstalkaboutmoney. |
