SUMMARY
£10k Bonus Race.

GFF from GS 2 days prior. Going Stick reading from 11:00am. Double Figure number of NRs in other races due to 'Going' but, surprisingly, none in this and trainers all happy to let them run on GFF.Stalls Stands' Side of the Outer Course. Medium to Stiff NNE Wind = Half Tailwind from the left. Temperatures due to get into the 20s Deg C for the first time since a brief spell in late March. Intervening period cold and below 15 Deg C mostly and one of the Wettest Aprils and Early Mays on record.

Very odd. After all the wet weather a dry period for one Week and this race the joint 3rd fastest 2yo race run here since the start of 2004 season. The fastest not much quicker in 72.62s in June 2005 by the useful, but nutty, Bucharest. Worth noting the unusual Wind direction so a helpful Tailwind this day when the Prevailing wind (SW) would be mostly a Headwind. Previous Race on day won in 72.85s by an OR67 rated 3yo filly carrying 2lbs less (2L winner). Take the comparison literally and an OR90+ effort by the first 2 here. Pair were 4.5L & 5L clear of the 3rd & 4th who both came into the race with OR70s placed form.

Field raced wide Spread on Centre to Stands' Side Strip. First 6 through halfway spread and all within 1L of the lead and an average pace early at most. WA in 7th at 2L. Windhoek racing on Stands Side of spread line with Gold Hunter in the Centre and Janoub Nibras on the outside. Gold Hunter making a similar forward effort to Windhoek and JN inside 2F out and the 3 of them briefly together around 1F and 3-4L clear of WA & IA. GH stepping up from 5F and an early fade as if the 6f too far (5.5f too far even). But, he had also not looked a fluent mover before tying up at NMKT and similar here and hanging as losing touch with the leading pair.

Watch the Video and easy to convince yourself a number of this field were feeling the firmer ground. Even the winner was hanging in the last 1F which looked ground related but Windhoek a genuine attitude so still responding to try to nose out JN. Worth bearing in mind the firm ground and possible 'ouchiness' as an excuse for some of those well beaten. A number of those also too free and held through to halfway.

Windhoek declared for both of the first two 6f races of the season but one race abandoned and an NR in the other. Trainer Johnston tends to front load better ones into earliest distance batches. First 6f debut in 2011 a debut winner for example. So, on circumstantials Windhoek an interesting horse. In review lighter framed than some in the field and not an obvious sprinter. But, very fit and ready perhaps because of the delayed debut (Picture). Strong performance in the race given that although perhaps with less scope to improve than might seem likely. Likely to come up short above Conditions level.

Janoub Nibras a likeable Hannon 'Bigger Type' with more scope. Definite OR90+ and the type that they would try in the Woodcote Stakes before going on to 7f races. Ok to follow.

Gold Hunter a smaller type and typical of the ready 2yo Godolphin run early that are not better class. Solid effort here until fading but OR80s and probably end up in nurseries.

Trainer Cox often has early runners who place FTO then fail to win or take a lot of runs. Looking at Well Acquainted here and you would say the reason was that he was not thriving physically. On debut he looked a short but strong bulky type and had scope to develop. But here he looked sweaty and not happy and going light (losing bulk) in some areas. Despite this his Coat looked very good but that is is separate issue from basic power ability. The right feed and supplements will sort the coat. Beaten here by better horses but too free early and perhaps not handling the firme r going fully. Added to looking like he has gone backwards physically meant a poor effort. (Picture)

Indian Affair not look out of place in group and ought to be low OR70s. Mostly ran settled here but seemed to be feeling the firm ground by halfway and not really picking up. Unlikely to stay 6.1f anyway. Trainer seems a negative for getting him to achieve his potential at 2yo.

Pearl Ransom in the owner's 1st colors but looked the lesser type of the two. Smaller, short and heavy and not fit enough. Added to that an immature attitude. Ran green in the race and looks a development project to get him to rate OR70+.

Trainer Stuart Williams not that interested in 2yo races but has had some strong debuts with good ones including for these important owners. Pearl Reward a likeable big type, taller and heavy front. But, mentally not tuned in and a blanket for stalls as if a worrier. Took the field along in the lead well enough until getting tired. Appeals as an OR80+ 7f+ type and you would assume he would only be running this early if he had shown some good ability. Otherwise, given his size, the trainer would presumably be letting him develop more. This looked like an educational run which he passed well. Disappointing if he isn't much moe fancied and competitive STO.

Overall sire Holy Roman Emperor gives us too many smaller and compact ones and doesn't really convince as a 2yo sire. 2 x Listed wins in his first 2 seasons given the opportunities he had is below average. But Cuisine a bigger and bulkier model if still compact. Trainer Balding has likened him in type to Supersprint winner Charles The Great who he trained in 2011. Given the overall paddock positive a surprise to see him at 33/1. Another who ran a bi too freely then not picking up on the firmer ground. Ought to be Open Maiden class.

Stand N Applaude & Vandross both lesser types against most of those they finished behind and both medium to smaller types, lacking some width and build but neat enough. SNA much more ready and fit. Vandross still very green. SNA ought to be usable 60s and win in a lower Northern race. Vandross one of a two early debuts for trainer Chris Wall who has a consistent record of finding 1-2 winners from 12-13 runners each year. Debuts are usually umcompetitive unless a better class one. But he tends to front load placers and winners. Vandross should snap together STO from this green debut and be targeted at a suitable race but OR60s type at best.

Intense trainer McCabe, or perhaps humourless, being nterviewed by RUK as the race was being run. Said Winged Icarus was so named because of the dam's name rather than because he had been flying up the gallops. Said he was a bigger model than Caspar Netchser & Sans Loi (both debut winners) and had more scope but was less precocious so while expecting a good run not a win necessarily. Trainer now seems to introduce his first batch of better ones late May to June. Arrived late so limited review but, although perhaps a bit taller, just looked another heavy low one that the trainer likes. Perhpas took a bad step out of the stalls and the jockey trying to pull him up almost immediately although he did canter the full 6F. Given the 'nominal' beaten distance of 99L which is presumably some limit on the BHA system.
