SUMMARY
Good from GGS 2 days prior but report of 'Watered Overnight' but no details. Going Stick reading from 08:00am.

Light Southerly Wind = Crosswind from the Left.

Charlie Hills in his weekly blog = "the two speedy looking fillies Barbs Princess and Glen Ginnie are entered at Goodwood"

Barbs Princess runs over 5f, rather than 6f here, at Sandown on the same day.

Hannon has won the race for the last 4 years as part of his dominatin at GDWD overall. Two of last 3 wins with FTO runners as 9/4f & 11/4f and a STO win in 2011 at 4/9f. Jockeys here are Hughes on Sky Lantern who has been entered in 5f races from early season but starts here and Moore on Indignant as an owner bred for a Stud. Hannon quoted on his Website = "Hughesie .... will be aboard Sky Lantern, who is a lovely grey filly.... She is well made with a pretty head and long ears, and she also has a very decent pedigree. She breezed nicely on Tuesday and we like her a lot, while we also run Indignant, ... who is also ready for a run.". Which seems easy enough to sport which one is supposed to be the better one on the way to better races.

Worth noting that Hannon has said he has been slow to get going in 2012 because of the wet period but now expects to get 'rolling with the 2yos'. This picked up in a Racing Post piece. But hard to see how the 'stats' say he is behind. Look at his record to the previous day in 2011 and it was 31 individual runners fro 8 winners of 9 races at 19.6% SR. In 2012 to the same point it is 28 individual runners for 8 winners of 9 races at 20.5%. As ever with Hannon, so consistent you would think he planned it. How does the 2012 record count as a 'Slow Start'? He has 5 runners on the day including 4 solid looking FTOs.

Worth noting that the set of 3 races at GDWD, SALS & SDWN regularly produce good winners and mark a point where the Royal Ascot types are going to have to come out and the bigger stables are all 'getting going' to some extent after the early season skirmishes over 5f. In 2009 Hannon won the SALS race with a Gp3 winner. In 2010 Hannon won this race with a Gp2 winner, the SALS race was won by the Gimcrack victor and the SDWN race by the Queen Mary winner. In 2011 the runner-up at SDWN won a late season Group 1 (in Italy mind, and as a maiden so some sort of Listed quality in reality). But an interesting set of fields for the 3 races on the day in light of that background.

Slow Pace and an uninformative and perhaps misleading race for some of the beaten fillies because of that. Some of the fillies will have been going faster at home. The Apprentice handicap as the last race on the card run in 71.86s by an OR54 older horse carrying 7lbs less. This race 3 seconds slower than an OR54 horse and below that level when WFA etc factored in. Beaten horses here trundling about.

Sky Lantern talked up by trainer who usually brings at least OR82+ ones to win this race and they can be much better. This one well above that base OR level on circumstantials. Beacuse of the slow pace and the lack of size and nous amongst the opposition she did not have to beat much so you would presume Hannon saw nothing he had not seen before about her. She did settle well and led before 2F out by her basic cruising pace. Jockey Hughes amused himslef in the last 2F by getting her to go clear for minimal asking then asking again int he last 1F to 'teach her something'. Showed enough in size and movement terms to believe the hype in as far as she showed.

Cruck Realta running for Channon who usually brings OR65-74 types to race recently and does not try to mix it with the Hannon better ones. His runners in 2009-10 were unplaced in larger fields and too a little time to win. CR a cheap one and typical smaller and compact one by Sizties Icon but ok build and mover. Trundled past Indignant without looking real Open Maiden class. Probably one to be wary of STO with a '2' next to her name and people relating her to Sky Lantern when she wasn't, in any real terms, in a 'race' with that filly. Better to judge her against Indignant.

Indignant able to set a slow pace but still only manage 3rd and looking smaller type. Not Open Maiden level on this effort.

Glen Ginnie given the non-involving FTO ride by jockey Hills and green with it. Lost 2L at the start and then held 2.5L off a slow pace. Jockey then started wandering around with her to Centre track towards 2F out and she lacked the nous t do it and got unbalanced. Plugged on towards Indignant and CR after that without showing much zip. Can do better for being more knowing but the three fillies in 2nd-4th seem like ones to watch NTO and see how their form works out.

Sweet Alabama clueless and looked reluctant to get going at all. Poor even by current Millman FTO standards. Unable to judge her on the few 'long shots' of her.
