£10k Bonus Race. Eventually FGF on the last 5f from GFF around mid-day. Going Stick 0.3 firmer by 13:30.GFF from GF 2 days prior. Stalls Far Side and no Rail Out reported. Light Easterly Wind = Tailwind. Meehan about Notably fast time aided by firming ground, with no watering, and a tailwind. Only faster time since the start of 2004 it a race with a strong comparison to this one. When Channon's Ajigolo ran 59.3s on concrete (which watering seems to stop these days) having run poorly FTO then showing his real ability STO. That one went on to place in Group races here and win a German Group 2 (another soft option that Channon, Hills & Prescott farm along with Italian ones). Bungle Inthejungle another winner from the Newbury maiden he debuted in and the first of a group who raced on what seemed a 'swamp' strip which meant that group faded early. Channon had also been trying to get him to settle in work at home and a number of the gallops videos on Channon's site show BITJ held up in the rear. Here is what Channon said after this win on his website = "The son of Exceed and Excel has proved a little too keen to get on with things at times and middle ground seems to have been struck between the colt and work riders in recent weeks, with Mick hopeful of a bright future in both the short and longer term. 'I was thrilled with that - he's a big strong type who hated the ground on debut and we've had trouble with settling him at home ever since. Keith Evans and Matthew Davies have done a super job on him. Without getting into a row, they've begun to reign him in without curbing his enthusiasm and you could see the result on Thursday evening. We decided to let him slide as he's got so much natural pace and an enthusiasm to get on with the job. Hopefully he'll settle more and more with his racing, and Chris Wright and Emily Asprey are hopefully overjoyed as we'll probably have a big day out to look forward to. Something like the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot looks perfect for him. Fast ground and a three week break may well see him improve again. It's a stiff five at Ascot, just like it is at Salisbury and he didn't look like stopping off a fast pace last night. He could be decent.'" Which makes him sound like Ajigolo again. That one was 4th of 12 in the Norfolk at Royal Ascot (York) amd 2nd in the Cornwallis in late season (Salisbury again with Ascot closed). BITJ looks a better physical type than Ajigolo and seems a good type to follow. A solid group in the first 4 behind him with Jubilee Brig another substantial type who was running all over Hannon's Citius on debut and would have challeneged listed winner Ceiling Kitty more if not having been hampered twice by Citius. Another good run here but still takes a bit of time to get going A hallmark of Barry Hills MO was early season 5f debuts that took time to win and then improved in later season. Charlie seems to be doing things the same way and Regal Dan and Lucky Beggar were his first two runners and both are running ok without winning. See how they develop from late June on. Charlie has had two strong FTO winners at Newbury and York where dad would often starts good ones over 5f and 6f. The York 6f debut winner - Funk Soul Brother - had worked in a trio with LB & RDan. Black Monk another example of how the Market seems to have almost Blind Faith in Hannon at present. BM had made his debut on Soft ground and not smoothly able to match the pace of a ready filly. He didn't look pure 5f as a type and turns up here on a fast 5F strip with a tailwind. Lacking some build and size against the first two and unable to match them for pace. Lesser type then that pair and playing in their home ground. |
