GGF by race time from G at noon and Going Stick 0.3 firmer by 16:45. Going Stick reading = 12:30pm on day and warm and drying afternoon forecast ut 26 deg C. Medium Easterly Wind = Half Tailwind from the Right. Meehan about Give Way Nelson = "Should be better for the outing." Hannon on website wrt Jubile Diamond = "She sparkled in her work on Tuesday and looks sharp enough for the five furlongs. She is a Redback filly owned by Julie Wood, who was lucky enough to be here to see her work so impressively". Useful example to compare to the 2yo of 2012 quote from Hannon and shows how the view develops so that the April quotes can be left behind. Earlier Hannon said = "Thought she was going to be sharp but now not sure. Probably want 6f but should be decent.". Gone back to a 'sparkling' & 'impressive' working for 5F. Hughes comes on from GDWD to ride having ridden talked up prospect Sky Lantern to a win in a jog of a race there. Fast conditions and a Faster time. Look at the list of fast time run at the course in 2010-11 and this would rank 2nd on the list. The fastest was by an OR90s filly. The other fast times include Group or Graded winners like Krypton Factor, Dinkum Diamond, Zebedee & Maqaasid. But, a reminder that the condition play part in fast times with I'm Still The Man 3rd on the list. But, even taking into account the conditions this looked a hugely promising effort by Upward Spiral who seems to have grown and bulked up very well from 1yo to 2yo. Does not have a 5F pedigree but zipped away from a wide draw to control the pace. Did not quicken away but a strong effort and would have been better but for running green in front and hanging. Encouraged out of that and picked up again going to the line and won with a little comfort. Big, strong and moves ok and natural pace but presumably will be better at 6f. Beat off a smaller filly in Jubilee Diamond but one that the Hannons seem to think is a useful sprinter. Trainer Dascombe has used the race before to start a useful filly in 2009 with Above Limits but she lacked the scope that Upward Spiral has. This race has a good record of producing better fillys and Group winners and US looks a solid prospect. |
