14DegC. Strong to Stiff SSW Wind = 3/4 Tailwind from Right HS. Meeting billed as the "Start of the AW Championship" with some extra prize money into some races. Part of the Arena Group (ARC = WTON, LNGA & SWEL) adding an extra £1M through the Winter and a build up to an AW Championship Day on Good Friday 2014 with £1M in Prize Money on that Card. Having racing on Good Friday when there had been none before caused the usual split in attitudes between those ok with change and those seeing it as Tradition lost. This low level maiden presumably not part of any Championship. Typical split of genders for late season 5f Mdn with 1 male taking on 9 fillies (why that regular split at 5f?) Check why the time was so slow. You would presume they would soup up the track for a high prize money evening and some better quality horses running later. Pace didn't look frantic here but mix of Closers and the most reliable of the more fwd runners mixing at the finish. Simply Black small and over-rated previously. Ran settled and competently but not fully getting home. Bounty Girl running wide and losing ground on bend and finishing just behind her. Maiden Approach ran ok FTO but poorly STO and on the evidence here the problem was presumably she was some mix of too stupid and too wound up. Managed to win here despite a slow start and taking time to get going and not liking the kickback. Making progress in HS ok and wom Cmf after reeling in SB & BG late on and Inx & ears pricked at line. The tallest in race and looked like Bigger filly just that much better than two small ones lacking scope whose ORs are likely to decilne (SB already down from 78 in the July 27 Nurs she ran in to -66 here). |
