SUMMARY
GGS on Decs. GStick = 10:00am

17DegC. Medium to Stiff NNW Wind = Half Headwind from Right.

Strong Pace and Ifwecan makes Huge effort while running freely to eventually clear everything inside him by +1.5F & XF to Ld but 2Wd & still Free. V Gd effort from him given that early effort. Field spread over 20L at Tatt Corner path & Ldg 3 going too hard but Hughes just dropped TS 1L back before Hf having run hard enough early to 'save' his Rail pos & hrs always sttld. Racing against rail some adv. Neighbother not handle the hill that well then carried wide to straight by MTeam as that one switched off the rail to Centre on the turn.

Hughes said after the race Hannon had said to him "Use your draw but dont go too fast" adding that that was "easier said than done". His ride delivered that request perfectly. Going hard enough early to Hold Far Gaze & Haikbidiac from crossing him then taking back a bit in mid-race with the rail pos held & not pressing with Haik & Ifwecan in a Lo3. The order to 'use your draw but dont go too fast' could be shouted at EVERY jockey in a sprint race around a bend as an 'ideal' command.

But, it requires every jockey to know what 'using your draw [efficiently]' means which most do not. For example Ifwecan's jockey messed up by running too hard wide and then XF to lead hung 2Wd. If he had dropped in 2R and sttld after 1.5 to 2f run he might have won (given the strong effort he made before finally fading after the Suicide Mission the jk allowed him to undertake). Possible that the jk was just unable to hold Ifwecan on the downhill run, hrs just too big & too strong. But in a racing regime where 'strength' is overvalued no male jk can ever admit to getting 'run away with'.

Worth considering whether this overpressing in front is typical of Johnston runners. Trnr says he doesn't ask his jockeys to front run but to 'get into a rhythm wherever that positions them'. In races with so many jks asked to track leaders or hold-up behind this means his horses end up leading a lot. But many, from memory, seem to press on a bit too hard once the early efforts have got a position near the front.
