21DegC. Medium to Light SW Wind = S Headwind from Left BS, unhelpful Bend, S Tailwind from Right HS. Been thinking a bit recently about trainer's with poor records with 2yos and why owners persist with them. Tinkler & D Shaw both have dreadful records but in the last 2-3 seasons have 'found' wealthy owners to buy expensive 2yos for them to run. The result is exactly the same poor runs and inconsistency as with the cheap ones. Making the point that a "what do you expect with cheap ones" excuse doesn't work. Lots of trainers do 'ok' with cheap ones and manage to get wins and the horses to run competently & consistently. McCabe fits into this group. One oddity is that he can turn horses out looking in good condition but run poor races. A number, even at low level, looking better Phys Types than they run to. McCabe appears one of those 'detail' trainers who fusses over the horses and staff to the point of it being stifling. Always the last into prelims and often first out early. Fiddling with headgear etc.Volodina bigger & ought to run to higher than her OR46 but McCabe shown no sign of being able to find the answer. (The?) One 'trick' he seems to have is to switch to SWEL & use Headgear. That produced a 12L win for an OR50s rated 2yo last year who then got stuck up to OR76 and couldn't show any form again afterwards. Volodina on SWEL and FT Headgear. See what happens. (Also has Jk Winston FT = rode that 12L winner?) Pre-Race Note = wrote bit above then a bit later found out HT had put Winged Icarus (the 12L winner) up as a Selection noting his overall form was moderate but coming back to SWEL (after 4 x unp runs since the win & down to OR72) so selected. Also worth noting the horse now with Brian Ellison but with the same owner. The Wentworths seem to have taken their horses away with Ollie Pears having a FTO 2nd with an expensive BUp buy for them at NEWC previous day. Perhaps some owners do wise up in the end. |
