GF from G on Decs. 7mm rain on Sat pm. No info about any watering & suggests none has been done. GStick 07:30am as 7.9 Centre & FrSd, 7.8 StdsSd. Rails fully in on Bend for Wed & Thu. 20DegC. Medium SW Wind = 1/2 Tailwind from Left HS. Hannon jks = Hughes (Coulsty), Barzalona (STP, 8-5 so Hughes couldn't ride it even if he wanted to), Hanagan (Banaadeer, 1stCols for Hamdo). MaJo jks = Fanning (Ifwecan), LeeG (Tanseeb), SousaSD (SConn). Hamilton on VQ for Fahey with A5 on TTwo. Fahey pre-race on SL = "Ventura Quest has got a mark of 80 for his first run in handicaps which doesn't look over-generous, but he has scope for more improvement and he did well to win the other day, all things considered. I fear that he might really want seven furlongs or a mile and if he is going to take this, he is going to need the field to come back to him. I was surprised when Tiger Twenty Two won last time out as I really thought he was a horse who was going to need a mile or further next year and, to be frank, he doesn't show a lot at home. But he's run well all year and you'd never criticise a horse for pleasantly surprising you. George Chaloner keeps the ride and maybe he can surprise me again." Very Fast Conditions on Day with Fast Ground and a Tailwind. This race saw prominent racers hold depite the winner running the 2nd 1f in 10:09s & pulling 1.5L clear of other prominent runners. the 43mph before halfway on firm going enough to get those unsuited to those conds driven along well before half. Notably TTTwo. Those with a slow start or hauled back at the beginning put in the wrong pace and chasing a very fast pace which didn't fold much (?? See Sects note). Prob worth putting these conds into a 'Specialist' category and not rely in it at face value. If Bahamian Heights did what he did here at NMKJ, for example, he wouldn't finish the race off and fading intot he last 1f. Runners from GDWD Nurs fared poorly so worth thinking Why? Flying Bear held up at GDWD off a strong pace and then closing. Sitting right on the strong pace here and up in OR. Ifwecan set the strong pace at GDWD but Fanning tried to hold him up here and it didn't work. BOK and LdgLn erl but Hld and hauled back to 2R before+1f. Horse pulling then and FFH to some extent and unable to make the effort off the pace he did at GDWD.. Jazz has been a puller at times and given a hold up ride here in just the wrong race to try that. BOk but then hauled back on FrSd and ended up well back and XB to Stds-Cent by Hf and much too far back unless pace collapsed. Pace did slow notably (see Sect Times) but BHeights hung from Stds-Cent at Hf across in front of field to end on Far Rail & placers went with him & whole field went that way. Jazz completed a tour of the whole racecourse by working through the field in last 2F+ by going Diagonally Left from close to Stds RL to Finish being eased near line when just getting to the leading 4. With a less severe hold up ride and a straighter course he would have bene involved for the first 3 and still one to follow. Sectionals tell an interesting Story with the Furlongs Bah Heights set getting slower in each of last 5f. Suggest Pace Too strong and did produce race for closers but pace pressure early broke up most of field as they tried to chase it. The way the race worked out the only poss closers were Jazz who was held too far back and travelled too far across course and back plus having to pick through field last 2f. Les Gar Gan the other possible and BOk but then a bit wary as field closed up+1f & lost 1L then ran a bit free. Had closed up to poss 3L+ off lead around 2F out but then appeared not to be able to pick up when asked and lost a bit of ground to leaders again and hung a bit right. Visibly looked like he then got going again late to close back to leaders but prob this not worth much given how slow the final 1F was. The late 'close' poss just a visual effect of leaders hanging over to far rail and slowing down a lot late.
