24DegC. Light to Medium Southerly Wind = 3/4 Headwind from Right BS, 3/4 Tailwind from Left HS. Charlton website pre-race = "Aspirant ridden by Richard Hughes runs at 6.30 pm. Having been gelded since his last race at Haydock he appears to concentrate more and should have a good chance, dropping back in trip I hope will suit him." Terrific Stuff. A proper, all out, pace war of the type there have been too few of in 2013. 4 of jks decided to go fwd which left a pressing Lo4 after 1f with, from rail out, Debt Settler - Weisse Socken - Aspirant - Fine Art Fair (slightly slow start drawn wide & jk actv erl to try to get to lead but ended up going into bend 3Wd). The speed these 4 were going and the slingshot of going wide and running extra ground meant the Lo4 broke up on bend. Tight railing DSettler going ok with WSocken outside her going ok. Aspirant struggling to go pace running further and not as balanced on bend and dropped 2L+ back and dv. FAF HgL a bit then drop back on bend to be 4.5L back at Hf but at least dropping to rail now and not 3Wd. Pace too strong and last 0.5f+ a Text Book example of how too forcing a pace will lead to the runners turning inside out at some point. With just 4 runners here (rather than confusing banks) the changeover from 1-2-3-4 at Hf to 4-3-2-1 at post never quite happened. WS got by DS into last 1F but already stalling managed to get 1L clear of that one but Aspirant already plugging on and closing back despite a Bit HdL & not the easiest to steer. Aspirant stalling himself and Fdg Ln but enough to just get by WS. FAF looking like he 'picked up' ins last 0.5f when just po and finding tired horses coming back to him. Stalling himself late on. Meanwhile, jk on Boston Alex picked the wrong race to try a bit of quiet hold up tactics. Hauled BA back early and then found the other 4 charging away from him and the, probably confused hrs (what do you want? Stop or Go?), the horse didn't react to the driving and soon miles adrift. The horse then Hung badly left on the bend chasing the runaway 4. Woundr what stalking 6L off the pace on the rail would have achieved? |
