10DegC. Stiff+ NNW Wind = 3/4+ Headwind from Right in HS. Prob just an average pace but Pace wound on Bend and efforts prob started by-3f in HS. Which meant a searching test for some limited rabbits (Syd J prob Bggst) into the Headwind in the last 1.5f. LdgPr at Hf both making significant efforts to get to lead. In context of that a ok effort, at this low level, for Dark Crystal to hang on as long as she did. With LdgPr bound to fold given the pressure they had been put under by jks/conds the S&Ps in 3rd/4th again best placed to 'pounce' or slow trundle. Rural Affair unable fading last 0.5f leaving conservatively ridden Sydney James to pick up the lead without making a real effort and just maintaining his pace. Fascinating to watch Hughes trying different things on 2yos as they develop. Over 6f here LTO Hughes seemed to try to hold SJ up erl then changed plan and forced him into an attacking run in a fast pace race. Losing 35L from Hf to Final. That looked like a ride on an unwilling horse to some extent and dropping to a claimer poss confirming that. But, up to 8f and he gives a quiet ride judging where to sit off the pace well and able to win just by plodding on as the others fall apart. In the previous race he won a 6f race with a horse that had failed to stay over 8f LTO and gave that an attacking ride until it became clear there were other horses in that race on a suicide mission to lead so Hughes settled that horse a similar dist off the lead at Hf as SJ. A lot more tactics and making decisions and changing plans during the race than are apparent with the majority of jks. Diffident Beats had a WTRB report made of "Never Travelling" which seems a bit hard on the horse. He started slowly, perhaps an attitude problem. But he did make a big effort to get back to the group then was hustled to continuing making an effort 2Wd around the bend and then, unsurprisingly, had nothing much left in the HS. The jk continued with the whip but hard to judge whether his att was off or DB was jus knackered. |
