- Charles (Charlie) Appleby, 38 years old in 2013. Announced as a trainer for Godolphin on July 25th, 2013. Took over the yard and horses at Moulton Paddock, and the Marmoon Stables in Dubai, formerly overssen my Mahmood Zarooni until his disqualification in April 2013. Yard had been closed down and all Godolphin's Newmarket trained horses running under the name of Saeed Bin Surror in the interim. Appleby granted a licence by the BHA once the ongoing issues surrounding Zarooni's disqualification had been considered finished and a report issues. Items included checking all horses (approx 190) for steriod and questioning other staff about their knowledge of the doping. The final report suggested the doping was entirely the idea and actions of Zarooni with no other help other than three junior employees being asked to apply injections to horses without knowing what they contained. Had a brief riding career as a teenager while working for Susan Piggott but did not ride a winner before becoming too heavy. He moved from the Piggott yard to work for David Loder in 1995.
- Moved from Loder yard to work for Godolphin in 2002 but had, and did, work mainly as a Travelling Head Lad along with riding out. Became an Assistant Trainer in 2007 in Dubai. Became Head Lad at Moulton Paddocks in 2009 under Zarooni and that trainer gained his position as Second Godolphin trainer in 2010. [Hard to stomach that a bright person who has worked his way up, knew how training yards worked, etc. was working in the yard in a senior role while the doping was taking place. Where was he looking to miss the undocumented injections, changes in horses mentally & physically, etc. ]
