SUMMARY
Going changed to HVS at 13:00pm. Going changed to SHV at 10:30am after 10mm of rain from early am to that time. Still raining and not forecast to stop for 2days or so, S from SGS on Decs. 1mm of Rain overnight and Rain forecast for most of the day.

Stiff to Medium Northerly = Close to Direct Headwind

Slowest Time over 6f here since the start of 2010 by nearly 2 full seconds. Another day where rain on already soft ground has rendered the races uncompetitive and of suspect value for the future (except in similar conditions)

After Four Season's win here Appleby's STO record is 3 wins and 2 x 2nds from 5 goes. 2 of the STO wins off poor debuts. His record with FTOs 3 x 3rds in 8+ fields and 11 unplaced debuts. Appleby interviewed the previous weekend after he had announced that Barzalona (rode FS here) would no longer be the de facto jk on the horses from his yard (Moulton Paddocks). This followed Suroor saying on 2,000 Guineas weekend that de Sousa was no longer his first choice and he would be using Fallon a lot and on many of the best horses.

Appleby explained that the changes were part of the 2 Godolphin trainers being given greater (full?) responsibility for running their yards. Taking more decisions about training, personnel, organisation and so on. This in the wake of the damning report by the BHA on the set-up at Moulton Paddocks after the Zarooni Affair. Sheikh Mohammed also commissioned his own report on the whole Godolphin set-up which was not made publically available. But, a visible change was the disappearance of Simon Crisford as the Godolphin 'Racing Manager' and spokesperson. He had presumably been the link to ensure Sheikh Mohammed's wishes were relayed to the Trainers who were just 'employees' to some level.

Slower pace with Lo4 jogging along just off the rail with from rail side out, SR - JJ - Goring - FS. This front line and the race collapses soon after the uphill starts and JJ and then SR losing ground and gone by around 2F out. Goring plugs on with FS but fading 1F out. With Azraff fading before Goring after a brief effort from 2R that left Classic Collection to plug on through the debris in the last 1F having been held up in last position to a volunteer 2nd although closing a bit on FS late on as that one stalls.

Four Seasons a shorter but bulky and deep bodied type of his sire Dubawi. Looks little like his taller, lighter framed and rangier dam. Not tested for pace here and only showed he handled the bad going fine. Ought to be 80+ on build but need to see how he looks in a faster race.

Classic Collection another strongly built one with a bit more size then FS. Green during the race so dropped to last. Plugged on ok apart from a stall arounf 1f out and still going forward at the finish. Ought to be 80+ and Suroor usually starts season winners with his early runners and some can be good. Trainer has said he sees this one as a 7f+ developer and 10f+ at 3yo. Suroor has probably already started an early useful one with Elite Gardens who was entered for the National Stakes this week but not declared - presumably because of the going.

Goring lighter built than first two home and very fit. Trainer EJH has an unusual record for getting above average number of 2yos who regress STO then develop ok at some point. This her 4th STO of the year and all four have been noted as running too freely. Goring running a bit too freely in front ank her to halfway. Just a so-so effort and hanging right inside the last 2f then an early fade. Mid-70s somewhere and needs to settle down and strengthen a bit to be a definite Open Maiden converter.

Azraff an ok size and strength and should be 75+. Badly behaved in the prelims and too fizzy. Jk in the race gave the impression Azraff was just here for an Educ Intro. Which led to the odd spectacle where the jk wanted to use the whip to try to correct some mild hanging right. But, he looked as if he had been told to use HnH only and no whip. So, he left both hands welded to the reins and a long bout of slapping the horse down the neck instead.

Silver Ranger needs faster ground and an odd choice to run SR here. An WTRB after the race saying the ground was unsuitable and the jk saying the horse was never travelling and he had not asked for an effort because he thought something might be wrong with the horse. SR supposed to be high in the Hannon list of better earlier 2yos and to go the RASCT. Not developing that well physically and what will the Hannon's do? Give him time to develop or try to win a weak race, perhaps on the AW, and still try Ascot?

Evans pair of Smugglers Lane & Josie Joe both look usable with JJ int he 60s and SLane perhaps over 70. But, neither has been able, or possibly willing in JJ's case, to put a race together yet. Which perhaps explains why Evans has nott be running them a lot early as if they were 'Now' rabbits. JJ going ok here until the pace upped a bit after Hf and soon dropping back and getting unbalanced. Looks ok size and strength behind for 60s and perhaps grown a bit since STO. But, weaker front and not handling slower surfaces last 2 times. One to run in a Nursery at the earliest opp? SLane a taller and possible for 70 but green and soon behind on debut and jk active for whole race here and also losing ground as soon as pace upped. But, like JJ one to track for development and what Nursery mark he gets.
