SHV by Race Time. HVS from S on Decs. Always an interesting question over whether these early Listed events are just 'Precocity Championships' or have longer term significance. Whether getting Black Type in a race like this, when less than 600 x 2yos have run at all yet, should be valued the same in a Sales Catalogue as Frankel ironing out a top-class field? There shouldn't be any argument over the last question but it is how things are and no sign of any change. What's this, the first two home won the first two races of the season on March 29th and were well ahead of the 2yo WFA level then. Seems they still are. For how much longer? Discuss, use both side of the screen. Another pre-race discussion was whether Cajoling was the worst 2yo Qatar Racing had bought after a win in the 2+ seasons they have been playing that game. Like Godolphin, Highclere and others they have paid inflated sums for ordinary horses by not 'reading' results properly. Along with having the likes of Thumper in training you start to wonder whether the Qataris are being used (or possibly doing it themselves being apparently nice chaps) to support mates' yards. Perhaps helps if they went to the right School. Whatever, trainer Portman came up with a good example of always dodging the 'Quality' issue when talking about 2yos. Especially when someone has paid you a bundle of money for a small one. To quote Portman's Tweet pre-race = "First runner for Qatar Racing today. Tough race but Cajoling is a tough filly.". Ambiguous, in the sense that he seems to be using 'Tough' to mean 'Better Quality' for the race but then shifts to 'Tough' meaning 'Tough' for the horse. Like trainers who say a horse is 'nice' and 'lovely to deal with' but never faces up to the question of how fast it can run and what quality of athlete it is. Tough all round, make it mean what you want, after this result. |
