GF by Race Time. GGF from GS on Decs. CoC Quote = "Inner of Straight dolled out 14yds at 6f and 6yds at the Winning Post. ". Usual Eye-in-the-Sky camera angle for Son Of Africa's Breeze Video but looks positive overall. At least medium with average length and ok strong front, if a bit upright. Goes along well for first 1F of breeze when not pressed and balanced and a fastish action. When asked to pick it up a bit he gets unbalanced x 2 and perhaps not helped by loose surface. Finishes off ok back to his 'standard' pace. Worth noting the ASCT Breeze sale has the horses running along a rail from 4f(?) out and then around the RH bend to get to the 2F 'Breeze' point. This is different to the straight course set-ups at NMKT & DONC where they just canter a bit, some just hop around while being held back, then are allowed to go full tilt into the gallop. War Alert's Breeze VT starts with her looking Sweaty and hard to hold in the gather area. On that you would check her for how relaxed she is in the prelims and not surprised if she was too free in the race. One of the key differences it seems with Breezes is the horses don't have to race relaxed for 3F until they get to do a 1F+ blast. In the breezes they just canter a bit then are allowed to rocket off at top speed to set a time. She looks middling size with a strong front.but a bit of length and still notably Up Behind (as Blue Aegean looked in her Breeze and another problem with forcing horses to be ready to Breeze). Despite her length she does use her range well and getting her hindlegs well under her later in the breeze. Runs mostly level and straight until rolling right handed 0.5f from the end of the 2f Breeze. Seems a likeable point that she finds another kick when straight again on the rail and niggled by the rider. Should be a bigger type in PRev than Blue Aegean? Interesting Race and one which serves to highlight a number of 'Working Rules', both new and old. A newer one would be that Real Races are not 1-2F Time Trials so just timing horses at Breeze Up sales is going to be variably useful - how much correlation is there between 1F time and Best OR at 2yo for example? A very old lesson to relearn is that Frank Spencer comes very low on the list of jockeys you would choose to deliver a FTO win on a 2yo. Did quite well by his standards in losing just 2L from the start drawn on the rails. But that was enough to end up in a pocket on the rail and how painful it was watching his brain creak and groan as he stumbled repeatedly over doing something decisive. Give us an anonymous jk who learnt his trade riding lots of 2yos at Hannons, for instance. Like Dobbs or ... Dane O'Neill who rode Son Of Africa to get to a good position from a middle draw and ended up controlling the race on the rail (with Spencer behind working through another slapstick routine hideously reminiscent of the 'Thomas Baines Affair' just over 5 years ago. It wasn't funny then either). Hannon intereviewed before the race and said Lwah was big strong horse but one for 7f. Gave the impression he was perhaps hard to get fit at home because he was so bulky and the 6f run here to see what he can do and give him a harder 'work gallop'. Pictures made that look very likely showing Lwah to be a good looking bulky one but not fit enough and too relaxed and not mentally sharp. Ran that way in the race getting to midfield ok but a bit outpaced after mid-race and then an earlyish fade. Another Al Shaqab debut 2yo from Hannon looking like it is there as a development run (like Smaih, Osaila & Shagah). On further reflection the 'Races are not Breezes' idea gets a bit turned over because Son Of Africa came from one. Candy interviewed afterwards and typically lucid despite his over-the-top laidbackedness. Said what he liked most about SoA at the Sale was his 'head' and his relaxed manner. Meaning the professionalism and mental maturity SoA showed. Which comes back to the point that Candy wasn't stood there saying SoA did 1f in 10.5secs, or whatever. He was talking about something he knows is important to make a racehorse. He also said his horses had not been right for 1 month but the 2yos now look ok. Said SoA would need 3 weeks between races at present because of his legs needing time to 'mature'. [Summary] A race, unlike Jungle Cat's at GDWD for comparison, where the Story seems quite easy to pick out of the information available. Just an Average pace to Hf but the free-running Alpha Spirit upping the pace soon after Hf to provide enough of a test to make sure the lesser, and unfit, ones faded. Son Of Africa competent as Candy noted and needed that professionalism to just hold on. A medium one but with ok build and fit and ready fro the day. Some sort of late 70s into 80s sprinter. Lady Moscou 'not a looker' (copyright Inverdale, J) and a plain filly and a a bit masculaine. But at least medium size and strongly built. Fallon ridden but got to a prominent position anyway. Looked to have less basic pace than SoA when the efforts went 2F out but sticking at it well until Fallon got tired and eased her before the line (as he always does, only give him 95% of his fee and perhaps he will stop it). But a 75+ one on looks and 50/1 unrelated to her physical type and also probably to any info fromthe stable. War Alert a bit narrow bodied and lightly made for a 2yo that cost 270,000gns. Presumably a case of where a fast Breeze time adding a lot of premuim to the price and not the physical type. Ok range and movement and looked relaxed enough in the prelims. Trainer Brown trying to avoid being interviewed and also avoiding saying anything ike she should be a certainty here before RASCT. But the general message was that she was very fast and they expected a win. Brown much more interested on the TV in making it clear he thought she was a 'long term' filly and not just a ready 2yo. As with Godolphin's Blue Aegean the FTO race left the impression that trying to make her run a race in behind resulted in WA not showing that natural speed that she has. She travelled fine to the pace but looked a bit confused in the last 2F (not helped by the jk) when not able to go forward or stretch out because she was behind others. When she was eventually switched out left (she had been offerring to hang left at times before) she didn't get balanced and a toss-up whether she didn't show any Change of Pace when clear due to being unbalanced or because it wasn't there late into the 6th furlong. As with Blue Aegean you hope they let WA roll along, perhaps in the lead & perhaps 5f, STO so we can see what sort of racehorse her Breeze Speed converts into. I tlooked a promising run from Mistamel who was green throughout the race. Despite that he made most places and VTLs to the finish. Not that bulky but an ok size and range and ok for 75+. Mistamel the 5th runner for FS Sire Rip Van Winkle and none have been 'lookers' nor mentally sharp but 4 of the 5 have shown ok promise FTO. Orlando Rogue somewhere around 70 and not as physically 'good' as his dark looks suggest. Average effort here and a downside trainer. Alpha Spirit a small one in the field and sweaty and running too free in the race. An ok effort 2F out given that before an early fade and effectively running to her Peak Level. Lower to mid 60s and Channon will something with her through persistence. Lwah the best physical type in the field but 'as advertised' in the sense he is a bulky one to develop with racing and probably 7f. Ran too free for a while before Hf with Hughes hanging on to him. An ok effort before the fade and eased. Ought to be at least 85 and follow development. Red Tycoon cost a lot of money but his 1yo picture from December 2013 made him look on the small side, lacking the length the sire usually adds and front heavy. Put on a bit of muscle but similar set-up still and 60s of some sort. First 2yo runner of the year for Ed Dunlop and he isn't a notable Front-Loader. The early runners can be variable quality and include a number of season maidens. Despite the price tag RT looks like an intentional slow developer to see whether he can get a competitive OR in nurseries. A very poor start to the season for the Hughes/Blockley 2yos and not a singla place and a lot of duff looking 2yos. Striking Spirit another one and do they have any usable ones? |
