SUMMARY
GGF from G on Decs for Weds & first day of 2 day meeting. GStick at 7.2. Despite slow times for races on Weds the course watered by 3mm after racing. Despite that reporting GStick at 7.5 early this am. Times should be faster on this day because wind has switched around to be a stiff tailwind.

Stalls entire width of of far side course. Field raced Wide spread across centre line but off the rails on both sides by 6-7 lanes. With unfancied fillies in the first 4 places in the leading line at Halfway, the Hf to Final positions show that the first 5 home were in 5th to 9th at Halfway within 2-3L of the lead. Moved through together with only 1 'Time Length' seperating those 5 at the line. 1st, 2nd & 4th on Stands' Side wing of the Bunch and 3rd & 5th more to Far Side of Group at Hf.

Charlie Hills website pre-race = "On Thursday we could well have two representatives in the two year old fillies maiden at Newmarket - Mary McPhee (by Makfi) and Rise Up Lotus (by Zebedee - pictured). They are two totally different fillies to look at, with Rise Up Lotus looking all speed and Mary McPhee a more long term prospect. They both go nicely, however they won't be knocked about first time out."

Dobbs riding Spirit Of Xian (S of Christian, apparently, & not a Chinese Province), with Hughes still injured and Moore choosing to ride Lacing for Fahey & Cheveley Park.

Photo Finish =

Post VT Work = race of variable quality over the years but typically around half the field manage to win open maidens or fillies' auction races. 2013 a notably good year with the two bit 'eyecatchers' proving to be winners at Group 1 & Group 2 level and both targetting the 1,00 Guineas. This year seemed to lack to obvious Group leverl stars and also a slightly tricky race result to 'Read' Visually the race played out like a slower pace (probably below 0) with a number of fillies pulling in the first 2f. It then turned into a 2F sprint with the usual complicating factor at NMKT that some of the fillies didn't handle the downhill part but then getting balanced inside the last 1f uphill. As a top-level idea work on basis that there are a solid number of Maiden winners in the field but not everything in the first 8 look like automatic converters. [Aside = Rowlands in his Sectional Timing debrief had the Winner running a last 3f at 104.5% of the total race time = negative pacing and a faster finish off a slower pace].

Spirit Of Xian running that faster last 3f despite the jockey waiting to make the final effort and then SoX hanging left on the downhill before gathering herself in the last 1f and a strong finish and won a little comfortably. She looks some sort of 80s filly that the Hannons often run here (say like Tassel in 2012) and will finish up running in major track nurseries rather than being Listed+. Victory another pluss for the Dobbs quiet efficiency. Al Ghuwariyah the better end of the fillies Ryan runs in this race and ought to be fine for OR75+. Might well have won but for getting a bit stary in front in the last 1F and then having to pick up again as the winner joined her.

The 3rd & 4th home then present problems for thinking this is a strong group and most of the first 8-9 home will win maidens. El Che a Channon homebred of some sort and one he will be looking to squeeze the most out of early. Perhaps to try to sell her on or increase her breeding value. He managed that in 2013 with the sibling getting 40k for it despite it only managing two seller victories. El Che a small one and not looking a real Open Maiden type and perhaps OR60s in the long term. She has been trained in work to go past horses and lead and professional here as some of the other fillies were floundering. How much of her ability to get from 2R to challenging in the last 2F was superior nous and how much her really being an OR75 type? Lean on the side of let her prove it rather than looking to support her. London Life a better type than EC but still looking early OR70s. On STO here and took time to get going before finding a late run. A lot of weak maidens for her to win before mid-season but see how the race develops in subsequent form rather than thinking she has 'proven' herself Open Maiden class in this slower race and bunch finish. Probably similer comments with Belle Fille & Granny Alice. [Aside = WTF are the Stewards going to tell Fallon to stop pulling horses up before the line? LLife in a 4-way photo for the win and he's easing before the line, as ever. All green in the Photo Finish pic, Belle Fille (White) & Rise Up Lotus (No 14) jockeys both stood up having had to ease their horses late on as El Che rolled across them. ]

Then there are the flipside with fillies who probably are OR75+ but didn't quite show it. Both of the Charlie Hills pair - Rise Up Lotus & Mary Mcphee among the bigger fillies and both believable as OR75. In line with their billing from the Hills' website quote RULotus free-running and getting involved and challenging until getting tired and MMcphee given a totally non-involving ride from Spencer.

Lacing wouldn't count as one of Ryan Moore's better efforts. Holding her up early out of a slower pace then getting shuffled too far back and finally not trying to get any of that ground back while the field were still 'jogging'. Lacing did fine in the 2F sprint and made ground on the leading line until getting a little tired late. But, another looking OR80s and not higher class.

Tarando puzzling. Look at her yearling picture and why did such a canny outfit as Middleham Park pay that much for a weak neacked, scrawny one? Better here and showed some pace to lead but fading earlier than most. Given the connections and a solid enough debut by Bell standards but another tho let her prove it with a Maiden win. Gold Waltz an NR in the Brocklesby and clueless and looking uncomfortable in the hood here. What had she shown to make the Brocklesby seem an option?Another probably in the 70s somewhere but need to see a better run to prove she is developing. Artfilly perhaps a similar level and did not seem to handle the track although no WTRB report made.

Charlie Appleby didn't seem to be quite as 'tight wired' FTO as the previous & other Godolphin trainer when he took over in August 2013 and this is his first year with early debuts. Even in the Suroor/Zarooni era the early 5f debuts where always well below the normal readiness. No Delusion a second totally incompetent debut for one of his 2yos at the meeting so he has a consistent 2-2 record with early 2yos. On the other side she looks an ok physical type. Mild interest in Baileys Pursuit at a low level. An ok size in this group but some mix of green & unwilling in the race. But, has more potential than the 2 x poor runs she has shown and more physical potentiual than the rabbit who finished last for the same connections in 2013.
