SUMMARY
GFG as on Decs and as for the race the previous evening. 3mm of watering overnight. Note that the Outer HS in use and for the first time, after many years of silence, the CoC's report on the BHA website finally said for this meeting = "Outer Track. Round course distances currently 30 yards over standard.". Medium+ NNE Wind = Close to 3/4 Tailwind and similar to the the previous day.

Lieutenant Kaffee's Breeze Video mostly ok if a bit rough around the edges. Looks a medium one with above average length for a sprinter. A bit light behind and on the neck but mostly a solid build. Other than the niggles mostly neat and balanced set-up. Has a faster action than expected given he has some range and holds his head to the right and then up before getting straighter. Tiring in the last 0.5f and doesn't see the breeze out. Ok 70+ and check if ok size for 75+.

See Note below about Alakthal and his poor effort. Worth noting in PRev that he was on his toes dancing from the time he left the Stables right through the prelims. Using up too much energy. Also lighter frame and build than expected.

[Post VRev] = A better field than the previous evening at the course but still none of the runners presenting a solid 75+ Paddock Review. Not a case of finding the 'least worst' in a poor field but still looking for the best 'uasble' one(s) after all the niggles and negatives had been subtracted. Which would just subtract a few poiints from a possible 75ish effort and which were going to mean a possible clunker (there were 4 real clunkers in the outcome). A muggy night and a lot of sweating, some just because it was muggy and some more obviously related to attitude. As a general rule talking about equine sweating without factoring the behaviour and the weather is pointless.

Worth noting that the field raced wide spread from Centre track and a bit wider to Lt. Kaffee who raced along the Stands' Rail for a lot of the time. This effectively made a 5 horse 'Centre Group' and a 4 horse 'Stands Side' one (indicated in the Run Notes field). Given 3 of the worst faders raced wide you could have a good go at saying there was a Track bias and the Centre track slower. The strength and early nature of the fades certainly looked suspiciously like it. But Lyfka & newcomer Scarlet Bounty running respectable races from the 'Centre'. While bearing the possibility in mind it is more useful to examine the individual horses in this case because on Paddock (and AP) Review you could make solid cases for Alakthal, Native Charmer & Fast Magic being likely to run poor races before it was run (and wherever they ran).

In these situations, with nothing looking a positive all-round and 75+, it can be useful to identify the 'best' of the solid profiles at their level. Vegas Rebel a small one with so-so form and a 60s type. Front heavy with a long neck which he holds out and down, like a dog sniffing the ground, at all times in the prelims. Lighter and less powerful behind and not well balanced. But, he has a bit of bulk, is solidly fit and is calm and controlled in attitude (just don't try and stop him sniffing the ground).

It can be hard in PRev to 'turn the tanker around' and come to the conclusion that the small one you were looking to oppose (& to 'Make' the Market for others) might be the best PRev on the day, despite the negatives. Size in this case. As it was, he ran a competent race and was beaten by a bigger one. If LK had been yet another sweaty nutcase in the field VR would have won comfortably and been generally over-rated with PRev not factored in.

Lt. Kaffee looking 70+ in PRev but some niggles about his set-up and power making 75 more of a question. A bit round behind, a bit narrow bodied and one of those non-neat types who looks a different shape in each picture (depending which 'niggle' is showing most). But, he is fit enough, mostly calm and controlled and in good wellbeing (coat good, etc). Plus, he is bigger than VR if less chunky in places. LK able to win his 2-horse race with VR by outlasting him in the final 1f having travelled a bit better. The pair running alongside each other ont he Stands Side. The final 1f of the VT a good example of the visibly bigger LK slowly wearing the plucky VR. Both having raced professionally. Mid-70s of some sort.

Scarlet Bounty looking like a filly amongst the colts and relatively lightly made. A bit sweaty and green at times in the prelims but solidly fit. Also showed a combative & willing attitude which showed up best when not backing down after the break when sandwiched between two colts on the pick-up and pushing on herself. A solid run in the race and a brief better effort before a fade from StdsSd of the Centre Group. 60s of some sort and needs to bulk up a bit. But, should be usable given her likeable combativeness.

Down at the start you could come to the conclusion that VR/LK ought to be on the shortlist, as much because of notable problems with others' behaviour than any clever positive insights. Last Horse Standing stuff. Muradif also on the shortlist but a 'Gut Feeling' response every time you try to gett too positive about him. A shorter one but solidly made with ok body depth. Fit and in good condition and relaxed attitude. A bit oddly shaped behind and another tailing away there, unconvincingly. But, in this group why wouldn't he compete to win? The Gut response being a nagging feeling that he lacks the range and athleticism to move his bulk. A stodgy, plonking, mover at the walk and too much to want to support. In the race after running a bit too freely early on for a brief period he then looked like he couldn't pick-up properly because of his athleticism issues. Niggled along after halfway and looking willing enough but he cannot stretch out and move faster. A somewhat different view from VRev of his debut. Has the bulk to be 75 but need some positive evidence he can shift it efficiently.

Lyfka on her first run for trainer Cole having been transferred from the deceased John Hills yard. Has looked to have a bad attitude in her first two runs and wild at times. Much better here and relaxed in prelims and a mostly settled job making the pace while looking willing. A solid fade but positive signs she is the usable 60s type (at least) she looks in PRev.

Now into the final 4 home and the question of Track Bias returns. Would this quartet have run better running Stands' Side? On PRev & the first half of the race the answer would be 'No'. Along with a muggy evening, a lot of sweating and fizziness in the prelims the race was run at an average pace at most and those already mentally frazzled by the prelims added running too freely to the deal to ensure a clunker.

Fast Magic an owner bred one for trainer Ryan but, as the previous evening, FM still the most compact and deep physically (in a mre 'willowy' group by 6f standard). Raising again the fascinating issue of how much a horse's 'shape' is the genes it carries and how much the feed, work and prep the trainer does. What would FM look like turner out by Channon? Can David Nicholls turn anything into a box-on-legs sprinter given 2-3 seasons? And, so on. But, also as the previous evening, FM is plain not fit enough and discountable on that alone. The early fade was a bit worrying even given that fact and one who needs another check STO to see if there isn't something a bit more fundamental than fat slowing him down.

Alakhtal discountable on his behaviour. Sweating, fizzy, dancing and high-on-life from the 1/2 mile walk from the stables to pre-parade until he goes a bit quiet at times like he's worn himself out. Similar AP where without the previous view he might have looked an ok attitude. But, down and a bit knackered probably but still gets himself dancing ever time he finds himself next to one of the fillies. He probably was going to go 'Pop' at some time during the race anyway. But, just to seal the deal he ran much too freely in the first half of the race. Then his 'knackered' persona kicked in again by 2f out, all action spent. 75-79 but clearly needs to grow up mentally (and not go light bodied with all that nervous exuberance).

It would have been interesting to se Native Charmer LK, SB & Alakthal stood up next to each other as a 'type' to see the smaller difference. NC another lighter made one for 6f. Definitely more lightly made than LK and NC a 60s one probably. But, like a number of others, arrived in the pre-parade already sweaty, green and jazzed-up attitude. Hadn't settled down AP and trotting around the area behind the stalls while the other horses stood still or walked slowly. Then rearing in the stalls and running much too freely in the race.

Red Flute a negative before anything happens just because of the name-on-the-door. 33/1 outside suggesting a quite widely held view. In Prev he's fine and solid build and neatly enough made. Also mostly composed in a frazzled field. If 'Hannon' was on the Door you would be taking him seriously for the day. Another to run way too free but a very tame fade even given that. Another turned out looking very good by the stable but the race performance poorly correlated. Not much use for detailed PRev at that level. No strong ideas about the mismatch either.

Stewards' Enquiry text = "The Stewards considered the running of ALAKHTAL, ridden by Chris Catlin and trained by Charles Hills, which started joint-favourite and finished unplaced. They noted the trainer’s representative could offer no explanation for the colt’s performance. They ordered ALAKHTAL to be routine tested."
