GGF from G on Decs although 1.5mm of Rain overnight and possibility of light showers before racing. What is Cowell playing at? Thumper the only NR at the meeting because of the 'Going'. Also, why are 'Qatar Racing' bothering with €22k juveniles? Is this just a horse for Sheikh Fahad to send to be trained by a 'mate' who turned out in the London Marathon for his team? Don't do it, your sheikness. Separate yourself from the Godolphin way by having accountability, performance targets and weeding out under-performers from Year One. Don't get dragged down by 'loyalty' and the like. Traditionally a weak Early season Auction race with little longer term significance. The 18 horses in total that ran in the last 3 editions achieved a total of 2 low level Auction race successes between them as 2yos. This edition looked a bit stronger with Charlie's Star a competent smaller one probably capable of running near OR70 in early season although lacking scope (and off joint bottom weight) setting an ok possible standard for the winner. The quality of newcomers Thumper & Brown Velvet then the make/break for whether this was another race to forget quickly. Tactical withdrawal meant we couldn't see whether Thumper had grown from a gawky yearling by Namid, and turned into one of those big, upright fronted types by the sire who can be quite fast if they can ever run in a straight line. Or had grown into a gawky, committee designed 2yo. Brown Velvet running for a trainer with a solid record in his 3 years with a licence but never really shown any 'Ready Debuts' even with his OR75+ horses. He has already declared 3 x 2yos this year perhaps suggesting he is trying to get going early. But this the second non-competitive debut with a slow start and then hanging in the second half of the race. But, would have been a bit closer to the winner (giving that one 4lbs) suggesting a low performance level in the race. Brown Velvet not standing out and this race type looks her level. Lunar Knot looked usable as an OR60s type on debut and a slow start there was followed by some late progress. Probably a touch bigger, lengthier & bulkier than the winner but lacking that ones basic pace and competence. LK hanging left and looking unbalanced and proably outpaced when the pace upped around halfway. Seemed likely to fade out of it completely but found some response 1.5f out. Looks like a filly that needs further than 5.3f and a slower pace of race. Would be on a list to see how she developed except for the caveats over the trainer. |
