S from G on Decs. 14mm rain Fri-Sat night and 9mm Sun-Mon night. Stalls Centre. Somewhat puzzling race with some 'issues' which mean the final result doesn't make immediate sense. The first is why the first three through halfway faded so much and didn't finish off the race. The second is what is Cabbies Lou doing in a closing second at the line? Just an average pace with the field racing spread across Centre Track. The answer to why the leader Bahamian Art faded is the one easily tackled problem. BArt way too free on debut at BVLY and pinged the start and 2L clear immediately and the jockey with nothing to try to anchor behind. Which meant BArt took off trying to run freely and then soent at least 2F fighting the jockey. No surprise that she faded and another MaJo 2yo not progressing much off a Lost Debut. How much 'guile' is their in his homework sessions? As ever, we have been here before and the trainer started a filly called Atlantic Affair in the same BVLY race in 2013 and she was also a free-runner who didn't stay 5f. She ended up winning 6TO when upped from 5f to 7.5f back at BVLY. Which didn't seem to make much sense but probably need to know more about what MaJo gallops sessions are like. Atlantic Affair was a soild 75+ physical type and on the way she has been supported on her two runs you would expect BArt to be the same. But she wasn't in PRev and hard to see what the hype has been for. So far, so understandable. El Chee a small filly and on debut in what should be a strong maiden she finished 3rd and seemed to make some sort of believable 'move' in the last 2f. But, it looked a messy race with a heap together at the finish and one that could not be read 'straight' as positions and lengths beaten. On PRev that day she didn't look the sort of OR80+ filly who would convert to a maiden winner STO unless she ran into a really good one. In that sense, not a surprise to see not favourite with down-to-earth Channon probably not talking her up. Again, in this race she seemed to show ability a bit ahead of her size and lifting her a bit in the 70s perhaps. Travelling best through the race and taking the lead up without making a full effort. But not a lot happened when that was made and then fading in the last 1F to do best of the pacemakers but why fading off an average pace she travelled well to and settled? But, probably some level of confirmation to be careful about reading the NMKT maiden result literally. Indian Keys a solid filly with a bit more size in this field. Travelling ok to the Pace but then got unbalanced in the last 2f and not really going forward. Looked an ok type for 70+. Which left the fillies in 4th & 5th through halfway to stay on in the last 0.5f+ to contest the win. But, both this pair were only 2L and 2.5L visual lengths off the lead at halfway. Not a race where the Closers were 5L+ back of the pressing pace at halfway and the prominent runners fell apart in the last 2F. Moving Melody going better than Cabbies Lou in the last 2F to make a real effort in the last 2F and then just outstay the leading 3. But, even MM starting to fade and fold back towards the line which meant CL, who couldn't match the others' effort 2F out & also hung a bit, was able to plug on steadily (slowly?) in the last 0.5F+ to be closing on MM at the line and might have won a 5.5f race. A solid Fahey filly winning FTO is always reasonable although the issue of whether she just outstayed the leading 3 of halfway or something else going on. CA more of a problem with trainer Wilson having a poor record with 2yos. A total of two wins in the last 9 seasons and none since 2009. His only strong debut was by a useful and natural 2yo in Stolt. His only other win by a filly on 3TO in a weak RDCR race after a Lost Debut. He has already had a 33/1 winner this season with a STO win by a filly in a weak race after a prominent racing but solid fade FTO effort. Perhaps Wilson is trying harder this season or has a couple of usable ones? CL was entered for the Brocklesby so must have been ready for a run for some time. Perhaps she was just very fit and stayed on in conditions tougher than they looked. Whatever, she looked a small one and 60s at best. Looking around for reasons for the Halfway to Final Positions and the 'Closers' win you could suggest the pace was stiff enough, with BArt pulling, on soft ground to start to fold the race inside out in the last 1f. Assisted by BA & IK having problems and EC on the small side. The 'usable' pace in the race might feasibly have been a dividing line just behind the leading 3 at halfway. Really searching around for something to plaster over things you could also say the MM & EC were racing wider on the track than the other 3. NEWC having a history of visible track biases spread across the track in a nuanced way. Unlike the Stands' Rail bias on fast ground which is entirely un-nuanced. |
