£10,00 Bonus race and still a small field
Slow Time and wind not a factor. Time figure producers noting the track surface riding slow recently. Not a strong pace with Midterm Break confidently ridden and settled into a solid rhythm and the jockey not asking for any extra effort until approaching the final 1f, with Rose Of Kiev working hard to hang onto MB. MB producing a mild effort to go clear with just HnH asking and winning comfortably. Average pace allowed two of the slow starters to get back to leading line or 2R before early fades. But the pace strong enough on the surface, given the spread of abilities & race readiness, to turn the race into more of the usual 'Time Trial' shape. Leaving aside how Rita's Boy ran his race and what that means in quality terms.
Midterm Break a slightly unusual set-up, short and lengthy but deep in front and powerful enough behind. Better built than expected from his RIPN presentation. Importantly, his shape all 'works' ok together and a fluent, mover. In a field where the attitudes & behaviour varied a lot MB unusually self contained and relaxed. Nothing bothering him but stil alert to what was required of him and professionally getting things done. This also showed in the race with the way he listened to the jk and his settled racing style (perhaps a bit free+2f). This is him in the unsaddling enclosure after a lot of neck slapping by the connections, water chucked on him out of buckets, the other 3 horses already on their way and the Official Photographer wants to get him still and posed for a picture. Try that with most in the field, in a confined space, and you would risk injury.
A low [Est] for this performance reflecting the Race Shape but won with some comfort. His professionalism should help him maximise his potential - low 80s?
Rita's Boy the first horse for Middleham Park trained by Karl Burke who is now back fronting his stable after his disqualification and related finacial technicalities. MPR typically & tremendously gushing about the horse after buying him, for example :-
"This Captain Rio colt was sourced at the Tattersalls Ireland sale by both Karl Burke and Nick Bradley. We had initially planned to send Karl a filly but both Karl and Nick were so keen to make this colt our first acquisition that he became the automatic choice following 3 days of viewing yearlings. This colt was very hard to ignore, he has great strength, a walk that is effortless and a lovely fluent action that caught both Nick and Karl's eyes independently so much so, that Karl earmarked him as his pick of the sale. This colt is a boxwalker which means when he is stabled he is prone to circling in his box, this was made aware at the sale and didn't put neither Karl or Nick off from buying him, such is their belief in the horse. In fact, his box walking tendencies probably made him a cheap horse, as it would have put several buyers off."
In Paddock a Medium sized and balanced one and perhaps a bit better than ok build (looks different in different pictures. Not the bigger type that Burke often buys (and endears himself to B2yoR with over the years) but more the ready, neater 2yo. Burker won the preceding 3yo+ fillies maiden with Dalmarella Dancer who towered over the others in her field and won the race like she was in against 'kids' as well. His movement did look fluent to back up the sales pitch hype. Not fit enough and while relaxed in attitude he also was not mentally sharp and a bit goggle-eyed taking things in. Unlike the winner, for eg. Ran that way in the race with a slow start and needing time to undestand what was required. Adrift of the group of 5 through halfway but making ground between-2f and -1f as MB just went fast enough to get rid of the others. Not pressed to get through for second and still green. A good effort considering the ground he lost and definitely OR70s & possibly 75+.
Rose Of Kiev a bright professional in attitude on her third run and the same in the race and tried hard. Attended the pace ok until around halfway when it upped a bit and having to make her full effort before-2f. But stuck at it and only dropping off overlapping MB-1f and then fading-0.5f. Still seems usable lower OR60s.
Why would trainer Osborne buy Diminutive for £2,000 at the Ascto 2yo Breeze-up sale in April and run her in his own name? Is he looking for a 'Baytown Kestrel' like McEntee? Does he want a horse to run in his name or just 'a horse' on spec to unload onto an owner? Always worrying before you see the horse when it has a name like 'Diminutive' and you expect a pony. The filly was first into the pre- and Parade Ring alone and notably calm and professional. Yes she's small and compact and the bandages don't help the overall look. But some depth to add to the attitude positive. Seemed to attend the pace more comfortably than ROK and made her full effort later if fading a bit earlier. Might be competitive OR50s against fillies and if the pace she showed here goes deeper into the race. An ok use of £2k.
The most interesting horse in PRev was Tuebrook and a pleasant surprise. Not expecting a lot from a trainer owned one that hadn't been to the sales with no winning siblings. If you worked hard you could remember the dam was a nippy 2yo. Tuebrook arrives already prancing, colty and spinning away from his handler. The attitude all wrong but positives on the physical side. An acceptable size and notably neatly made and together. Solid build and the best coat condition on show to add to the 'sell'. Ought to be ok for 70+ and would have stood out in many SWEL rabbit fields lacking MB & RB. Still worth some money since he's better than a 33/1 shot. But, the fizzy attitude in prelims just part of his attitude problems. Connections saying he didn't like the stalls and overall his presentation suggested his mind was everywhere other than concentrating on the race. Missed the break then responded to the jk getting very active by getting fired up and running too freely and climbing over the back of MB for a while. Looked like he might be able to raise an effort in the last 2F but found nothing when the jk switched him out. Which is probably ok given his behaviour. With a trainer you could trust to maximise the 2yo performance and show progression STO you would be very interested in seeing where he went STO given his 33/1 on debut and beaten miles. With Mick Easterby it is almost impossible to guess what the plan will be and when the 'peak' effort might arrive. Rous Seller?
Scott Dixon's record with 2yos so far suggest that they will be ready to compete to win FTO if they are going to win at all at 2yo. Pearlise's full brother was 2nd of 13 at 16/1 on his May 15th debut but seemed to get smaller through the season and finally won in December after his OR had declined from 71 to 50. Which seems like another ready FTO one and tailing off as seems the Dixon MO at present. Which makes Pearlise's presentation here odd since she was the least ready of the field mentally and physically. A sloppy, resentful attitude along with being flabby and looking vey raw and needing development. Almost the exact opposite of Tuebrook. Hard to judge her quality in this state. A slow start in the race before getting back to the leading line to the average pace. Soon dropped and fading 2f out. Interesting to see how she develops, or doesn't, given the Dixon record and will she look better with time. Her brother - Pearl Noir - was a better looking horse at this time as a 2yo but perhaps a similar build and shape.
