Stiff to Strong WSW Wind = 3/4 Tailwind from the Left in the HS.

First Meeting on the new Tapeta Surface at the course. Many problems with the old Polytrack surface in general. Specifically over Winter 2013-14 with with the surface balling up and compacting too much. This lead to horses getting unbalanced with the surface compacted into the hooves and dangerous kickback when the compacted balls let go and fired backwards. This lead to meetings being abandoned part way through, regular surface inspections by the Stewards duing the meting and so on. Rowlands has pointed out that the Judge uses 5 Lengths per Second for Fibresand & 6 Lens/s for Polytrack to turn the Final Times for each runner into the 'Distances Beaten' which are made public. No information available on what the Lens/s will be for Tapeta. The wider point also made again is why don't the BHA make the Final Times for each horse available.

Having looked at various pages which purport to define the difference between Polytrack & Tapeta then none actually did. Several points came up which indicate that trying to define how the WTON Tapeta surface will ride in advance may be a pointless activity. Firstly the installation at WTON in 'Tapeta Vers 10' so subtly different from those already installed. The feedback also was that how the tracked is maintained makes a big difference to how it rides. Apparently the amount and depth of tractor work on the surface means yous can make it as compact/firm or loose/deep as the CoC wants. Added to that any new installation needs time to bed in and adapt to the maintainance it is given. A more sensble approach seems to be to build up the times and Hf/Final positions, etc, and check how the course develops.

One interesting piece did quote Hamdan Al Maktoum criticising the Tapeta sufaced at Meydan before this year's Dubai World Cup Meeting. Hamdan saying the Tapeta surface had been good when installed but a year down the line gave and inconsistent surface and some horses would not reach out fuly on it. One item to look for will be 'improvers' who seem to run notably better here than elsewhere. In this race, for example, Primrose Valley is settling down and improving with racing and had the form' to win this race. But, not by the clear margin she did it by.
