Rain during the meeting and going changed to Soft. GS from G on Decs. 2mm of rain from early pm the previous day changed the Going to G by 14:00pm during racing. 4-5mm of rain forecast for the day. Rail out by 3yds from 5f start to the cutaway at 1.5f from the finish. Increasing the Race Distance by 10yds. Fahey quotes in his SL piece pre-race = "I saddle two juveniles in the Maiden Stakes and I would be surprised if Billy Slater could win around Chester first time out over five furlongs as he's a big, backward horse. But he is quite nice and is another one of Marwan’s although I don’t think he will beat Ballymore Castle. We were delighted with his first run at Newbury and he has a great draw in stall two – I think he'll take a bit of beating as he's a lovely horse." Other than Ballymore Castle the usual sort of field made up with runners from trainers who target the Course and Meeting and any better quality in the field depending upon what they have ready(ish). A number of the other larger stables active in early season avoid the meeting or rarely have runners. Beacon being a NR meant that Hannon has had 8 runners and 2 x NRs at the Meeting since 2002 (2 wins) and only 2 since 2008, both with limited low 70s fillies. Channon has had a total of 2 runners at the Meeting since 2002. Mark Johnston has had just 2 runners (2008 & 2012) since 2002 and not usually a trainer to shy away from setting his 2yos difficult tasks on technical tracks. This field made up of 3 x Dascombe (trains nearby and sponsors at the meeting), Evans & Turner as get-em-ready-early-and-run-anywhere handlers & a few from other small stables (some local). Fahey had to run Billy Slater because the domineering Koukash insisted he should and it left Ballymore Castle as the one obvious 75+ horse in the field. But, you wouldn't have had Ballymore Castle down as a possible winner at any stage until the last 100yds. Niggled or driven along throughout and appearing not to be enjoying the going or bends or both. At 2f out on the band before the short HS BC drops another 2L+ back as the others make what efforts they have. Fortunatley, while being a usable pace it was enough to fold the front of the field back in the last 0.5f. Which meant BC could trun into a Deep Closer having now found his stride and plugging on ok. Found a gap through the fading front line late on and going away at the finish. Ryan Moore stood in for the injured Hanagan on BC and, as with other Hannon trained jockeys like Hughes & Dobbs, he didn't panic and add to the floundering when BC was rolling around and not going forward. Instead, sit low & still and try to get the horse balanced and responding. If it never does then jumping up and down frantically and getting busy with the whip (as most jockeys would do) isn't going to help. Having the confidence to do that is difficult in the British outlook of observers wanting 'strong' (whatever they think that means) and over-active riders. BC an OR80+ one and wouldn't have won without being at least one quality lvel above the others. 2nd to 5th home the 4 horses who handled the conditions best and race prominently & competently. Come Uppence looked a 'stayer' on debut who turned into a zippy front-runner here with the Evans drilling at home. A solid kick in the last 2F but.fading having been headed in the 0.5f. Probably low 70s. Similarquality for Hell Of A Lord and another competent run from a centre draw (Turner drilling at home) and jk While not floundering about as he often does which suggests HOAL knew what he was doing anyway and could have carried a sack-of-spuds round and raced competently. London Life has looked a similar low 70s level but her performance here perhaps needs marking up a bit. Fallon riding with an unusual mix of jks on the Dascombe set with Kingscote on the lower quality Macarthurs Park and Franny Norton (the 'King of Chester' jockeys) on Red Icon. Fallon in the news at present having won the 2,000 on the Dubai associates owned Night Of Thunder. Soon after that Saeed bin Surror announced in a TV interview (having not told anyone else apparently, including de Sousa) that Fallon would be his joint 1st choice jk from now on. Fallon is 49yo. Mix of good & bad from Fallon here and not unusual for him to be able to still do the 'usual' things well and automatically but looking a bit slow in the 'thinking-on-your-feet' dept. Ended up racing 2 Wide because he had got more reaction from LLife early when he was driving her along and then never able to get in so running wide & prominently throughout. On the plus side, like Moore, he did sit down and allow LL to get balanced & find a balanced stride in the HS. Perhaps 75? Red Icon not looking 75 in his yearling picture and a smaller one in this field although with solid bulk. Ran mostly competently behind the leading 3 and a solid effort in the HS to suggest he is OR75+ but needs full PRev check. Just Marion small and slow in this field and putting the BTON race she ran in LTO into further context. Hard to just the others because the solid pace and tough conditions meant they never got into the race. On Profile Billy Slater the only one to check for development but worth keeping New Abbey Dancer on the list. |
