SUMMARY
GGS from G on Decs with 12mm of Rain on Thu. Of general interest is the Course applied 5mm of water to the Bend on Wed despite the rain forecast. The previous meeting (no 2yo race again) was delayed for 30mins after the jockeys complained the bend was dangerous after the first race. That was resolved by re-aligning the bend which some people described as being more of Right-Angle into the HS.

Stiff Westerly Wind = Half Headwind from the Right. Picture at Halfway :-

Field raced on stands rail. Mixed pace with an average or below set-up to the race for the first 2f+. Around halfway Polar Vortex moved up to engage Alpha Spirit who was leading on the rail. With AS responding that set the race efforts off early and all of the fillies driven along before 2f out.

A race with a very mixed record of quality competing in line with the Sire's Sales Median qualitification to run. The median is an 'average' measurement so if you get a number of the 'best' fillies by a sire in the year (not necessarily the most expensive) you can have some quality amidst the low level auction types, seller winners and useless ones. In 2013 the winner was Sandiva (left below) who went on to win an Irish Listed and a French Gp3 at 2yo and a Gp3 at 3yo before a 9th in the 1,000 Guineas. None of that apparent from the PRev notes on the day and 'mood' affecting the reviewing a vague excuse for the error. Hidden in amongst the ruck of 70s types and below in 2012 was Supersprint & Redcar Trophy winner Body And Soul (right pic). She did look the best in her field for bulk and 80+ but in an unco-operative mood FTO (saddled out of the boxes because refusing to go anywhere she was asked to. In 2011 there wasn't much in the field and the only later winner was Dozy who won on the day and went on to win the Hilary Needler. She had one later unplaced run and disappered as her 'now 2yo' set-up suggested.

Which means it is with a little nervousness that the summary of this field would be perhaps some fillies leaking over 70 at the front and a couple of usable 60s, who might 'leak' unconvincingly, and a longish tail of garbage/bafflers. PRev not helped by cold weather, strong winds and heavy rain showers. Many of the fillies out of the boxes only a little before the race and all rugged up to various degrees (fully rugged unlike the pair of fillies above who gave the reviewer half-a-chance).

Polar Vortex looking better than on debut but lacking some build and a bit narrow bodied. OR68-9? Managed to win here by getting a soft time up front and then responding well to being challenged. Wouldn't have won without the 5lbs claim though. Probably the type to end in nurseries and having to run in a few to get down to a usable OR unless she develops physically.

Parsley almost invisible in the prelims and not looking anything different in the field context TP. Either the Hannon FTOs are a bit readier this year or the field weaker than the current take. Parsley able to take a prominent position from wide out to the early slower pace and then make a solid effort giving PV 5lbs. After the race she showed as a smaller model but a fairly typical 'Zebedee' shape. Short backed with ok depth although worth remembering we are the seeing the precocious & usable Zebedees out early and the tail of oddly shaped and very small ones still to come. Parsley probably ok for 70+ but not the full Open Maiden level.

Lanai competing to be the biggest in the field but one of a number looking mentally blunt. Made a solid effort having run wide and made a bit of ground to the finish. Inclined to view she is 70 and see if she is more mentally alert STO. Similar story with Gregoria in mental terms and walking around with her long neck full out and down. Probably travelling 1st or 2nd best-2f+ and not really pressed for a full effort. Higher 60s and see if the Market is more positive NTO (in terms of opening SP). The type Haggas will target to win STO in the right quality of race by a trainer who knows a good deal about the quality of his 2yos (not the 'could be anything' type).

Alpha Spirit a good marker horse in that she is a smaller, slightly compact, one and runs competently. Low 60s and might drop to 50s in late season because she doesn't seem to have any 'frame' to develop into. Ran competently here on the rail and hence a good 'Benchmark' to judge what the others were doing in the last 2f.

Seamoor Secret small and underpowered and vey lightly built behind. A real trier but is only 'competing' at any level because this is early season. Should be in sellers and hard to see her winning one unless it is one of the really poor ones.

Lunar Knot still a shorter, low slung on but with ok length and build. But, running poorly and not progressing and another to add to the list of McCabe 2yos that don't run to the level of their looks, nor consistently. Usable 60s and perhaps needs further but need to see some more 'promise' in the races. Pearlise looked physical raw & underdone on debut and with a reluctant attitude. Better physically here but still not race ready and the unwilling attitude still on display. You wonder why a 'Ready FTO' trainer like Dixon is running her, perhaps because they struggle to get her to do anything at home. Bullied & surprised into getting into the bunch ealy but losing ground and off the back as soon as the pace upped.

The Hughes pair didn't offer any promise for the future. Multi Quest the bigger of the pair but faded early LTO and another strong fade here although running too free for the first 2f. 50s if she can put a race together. Another small one in Sculptued and too green here but no future interest.

Lower Quality Median Auction Maiden. Race Conds = "£5,000 guaranteed For 2yo fillies, whose sire established one or more yearling sales in 2013 with a median price of not more than £26000 Weights 9st Entries 26 pay £ 25 Penalty value 1st £3,234.50 2nd £962.50 3rd £481.00 4th £240.50"
