HVS from GS on Decs. Rain sequence as 7mm Thu, 8mm Fri, 8mm Sat, 10mm Sun, 11mm Mon and a further 5.5mm overnight. Mainly Dry forecast for the day. Light Easterly Wind = Tailwind. Interesting recent history for the race with the last 3 winners all being Group winners at some point. 2011 victor Caspar Netcher won the Group 2 pair of the Gimcrack & Mill Reef at 2yo and a German Group 2 at 3yo. 2012 winner Top Notch Tonto parlayed his effectiveness on heavy going (and switch to a proper trainer, viz Ellison) to be an older Group 3 winner. 2013 winner Supplicant also won the Group 2 Mill Reef. Northgate Lad an unusual strong debut for trainer Ellison. Probably only the second debut winner he has ever had and the other was in late season on October 17th so not an early season ready one. Worth noting that NLad has been ready to race for some time though. He was declared for the Brocklesby as the first race of the season on March 29th. Not sure whether NLad ever got to the racecourse that day since he was an NR because the on-course checks couldn't match the horse present with NLad's Passport. So either the paperwork was faulty or the wrong horse was there. Since most 'identification' seems to be done by scanning the device implanted under the skin on the horses neck it would seem likely to wrong horse was there. Following quotes from Ellison taken from the Weatherbys report of the day = "However, the horse that was sent to Town Moor at the end of March, believed to be Northgate Lad, actually turned out to be his stable companion and fellow grey juvenile Silver Glaze, an episode Ellison described as a 'bit of a cock-up'. There were no such problems as Northgate Lad turned up on the Westwood as a 9-1 shot for the Maiden with Tim Easterby's Doncaster runner-up Mattmu the 5-4 favourite. The Ellison runner was smartly away in the hands of Tom Eaves and although Mattmu did his best to reel him in heading inside the last of five furlongs, Northgate Lad held on by half a length. Previous winners of the race include talented performers Caspar Netscher, Supplicant and Ellison's current stable star Top Notch Tonto, who struck for former trainer Ian McInnes two years ago. 'He's a super two-year-old. I thought he would win the Brocklesby but there was a mix-up and he didn't run. From day one he's been an absolute professional. Tom said he'd be even better on better ground and we'll come back here next weekend for the Brian Yeardley. After that I'd rather go to the Gimcrack with him (than Royal Ascot). We've got some good ones, but he'd be my best two-year-old.'" Triggers Broom a negative on the pictures & Videos on the MPR website (alongside the over-active sales pitch blurb which makes everything sound like the next Frankel) and a stiff/short mover behind in those. Hence the lower PRF. Bowson Fred running better than final result after VRev. Attended pace set by NL and made effort to duel with him in penultimate furlong. BFred stalling by 1F out as NL able to roll on using his range in front (BF getting shorter and a faster & shorter action in front than winner anyway). BF still a clear 3rd towards the last 0.5ff but almost walking by that point and swallowed up by those trudling on who were never in the race. Including, Izzthatright who was given a quiet ride and XB to the rail early on then trundled along the rail to a worthless 4th. Post Video Rev. Northgate Lad just a medium and compact one. What seemed to stand out was his fluent movement. Uses his range in front and reaches and side on shot cantering back showing F to B well timed & balanced. Showed short sections of good nodding but that patchy because jk holding onto him as he raced too enthusiastically. Running a slow time on HVS but surviving best of the pace and willing enough to respond to Mattmu's late challenge. Inclined to think he will be better with a faster test over 5f given the movement. On the other side lacking some scope and a precocious 2yo who will hit a ceiling against bigger types. Say, ok for competing Listed level. Worth reiterating the Ellison quote about NLad being a natural from day one. Winning FTO not really down to Ellison preparing him well but a natural enthusiast with some zippy speed. Mattmu another solid run and making solid ground and not looking a 5f type even in this slow test. Ok 75. Not much of interest behind. Bowson Fred ok for late 60s and a faster 5f test but lacking scope. Miami Carousel a smaller one and sub-70. Triggers Broom drifting in the Market (some info does leak from Fahey's) and a poor run. Difficult to judge whether the issues were all down to being green. The way the jk behaved in getting active from early on and using the whip when that wasn't enough looked like an attitude issue. Wouldn't be of any interest other than respect for Fahey's record. Smaller types behind and little interest and just some mild points to bear in mind. If you worked a bit you could be convinced that Mountain Man is being set up for something over 6f, perhaps the Rous Seller or a Nursery. Couldn't walk in a straight line from A to B if he tried. Working even harder you would say Celestial Dancer was a bit bigger than the average on show but clearly has a bad attitude.and the whip being used from early on. CD head up and rolling around, this looking as much a tactic to avoid complying and racing as being green. See how that develops, probably just Grim Fascination. |
