SGS from S on Decs. Stalls Stands Side & Fields raced 8-10 lanes off the rail. Fahey SL piece pre-race = "Under the new system, winners carry a 7lb penalty in the Novice Stakes so it probably wasn’t a disaster that Winstanley was beaten first time at Musselburgh. He has to step up on that effort to win this but could do so – although the ground will be an unknown factor for him." Hannon website typically free of worthwhile content aside fom this comment wrt Magical Roundabout = "... is on a reconnaissance mission in the novice race, " CC/AF/Mig as a leading line of 3 (CC running too Free) with MR 2L+ back and niggled along at times and Winstanley further back and driven along and rolling around before halfway. CC faded to a walk in last 1F with Mignolino travelling best, and looking fully professional unlike his FTO, and producing the best forward effort in the last 2F but folding back towards the others last 110yds. Mignolino a shorter, low slung types, but looking broad (more so than the taller AF) and strong barrel with ok length. AF outpaced-2f but plugging on again in last 0.5f to get back to 2nd. MR looking small and not picking up again when asked for his effort and moving a little awkwardly (Issue?). What was the 'reconn mission' for? Winstanley NIR and plugging on to a volunteer 3rd past the wallowing MR and the tired CC. Mignolino just a medium one in PRev and still not looking mentally sharp. But ok power behind and moves well. Slow start but responding quickly to get back to the leading line. Handled the going and conditions well and travelling best 2F out. Effort produced off that travel less than expected but enough to get a 1-2L break and hang on as he faded later. Low 80s? Abscent Friends in excellent condition and bulked up a bit (Turner spends his whole life 'fattening livestock' of various sorts). As on his previous run at ASCT he travelled ok then got a bit outpaced as the 2F out efforts went but then staying on again 75-6? Winstanley a smaller chunky one and hauled back from a good break. Then looked to be having difficulty handling the track/going. Better than he showed here but 70s of some sort. Captain Colby the biggest and strongest in the field and standing up the view that he survived a strong pace to win FTO by being relatively better class. Could be more neatly made but looks solid 85+. In that context a disappointing run and left looking for excuses. Making the pace here again and a bit more freely against better opposition. Obvious 'get out' is that he didn't stay on the softer going and perhaps not a 'York' type (races fall apart here in peculiar ways as at ASCT = both tracks relaid). But he bowled along well enough to get everything except Mignolino niggled away so he handled the going to some extent. Worth expecting an improvement on firmer going and see if value NTO. Magical Roundabout a smaller type of Zebedee and didn't look right here in PRev. Looking 'smaller' and not in good condition (miles behind AF, for eg) and an apprehensive attitude. Along with Winstanley looked like 2 smaller ones chasing a bigger Lo3 around halfway. So-so effort at 2F out and never stretching out nor looking like he was really letting himself go. A bit of HgR and then Hughes left it by-0.5f knowing the horse wasn't responding and the others going away from him. Looking back the race he won on debut was a slow time and the race empty of quality other than the runner-up (Fine Prince - runs STO day after this race) who ran green and wider on the track. |
