SUMMARY
G as on Decs. Stalls Centre.

Hannon on his website day before the race = "We run three. Aledaid is owned by Sheikh Joaan. He is a lovely big Acclamation colt – one of the biggest youngsters in the yard - and he has been doing everything right at home and could be quite exciting. Robin Heffer owned Canford Cliffs, and he has Silver Quay, who is also a very imposing individual. He is by Dark Angel, a sire we love, and he is big and strong, and we have always liked him, too. Our third runner is Among Angels, who is another Acclamation but leaner than most you get from the sire. But, though he is smaller than the other two, he looks tough and hardy, and he could be quite sharp." Much more interesting than the usual nice-type-ready-for-a-run stuff. Probably related to these being some of the better (best) ones and the enthusiasm showing through rather than the stock response for ordinary & lesser ones.

Charlton on his website pre-race = "Captain Marmalade is a very solid and tough colt who I bought to syndicate for 20,000 guineas from book two at Newmarket. He ..... should stay further and improve. Today’s competition may be a bit ‘grand’ for him but it is a start."

Usually at least a strong maiden with a set of Open maiden winners and some 90+ types. Chesham winner Berkshire 3rd in 2013, French Listed winner Sir Patrick Moore won in 2012. Traditionally the place that Hannon would start his best 6f+ 2yo he has ready but the last high class one was 2yo Group winner Trumpet Major who placed in 2011 (Canford Cliffs & Strong Suit both winners of the race for Hannon going back). The 2013 winner for Hannon (Championship) looked a bit on the small side to be a real better one and after a break and three later runs is currently on OR89 and worth seeing whether he ups that by end 3yo.

This looked like the best field so far this season in line with it's earl-top-6f-maiden status and trainers getting ready ones out to trial for Royal Ascot. The York 6f maiden this year a smaller field and a solid front 3 but less depth. Thsi race seemed to be an average pace overall with a pace lull saround halfway. The pressure in the final efforts did seem to separate the 75+ horses from the others though. The CP placed on Aledaid at present is a conservative one. The CP could go on Captain Marmalade saying the first 8 home are all 75+ and some other good candidates behind.

Adaay a 240,000gns purchase at one of the Tattersalls Breeze-ups in April so not a typical Haggas prerp. In his breeze VT gather looks above medium, strong front and more length than a typical compact Kodiac. A good breeze with a fast actio but reaching ok and balanced. Runs absolutely straight and maintains the gallop almos to the finish. Not the biggest inb this field and did not show anything really 'different' in getting to the lead late on here. Seemed to show the same long, balanced, effort he had int he breeze. That was enough to pick up the faders and stallers late on. But winning with a little comfort. Presume 90+ but perhaps less top-end scope than some.

Kodi Bear another by Kodiac in second and a different physical type. Shorter, deeper and a bit more compact. As with many Cox 2yos if they are winners they show it FTO. Had the advantage of running prominently but alos made his own, and others, problems by hanging left in the last 1.5f+. Another solid 85+ one professional and ready FTO and perhaps better behind.

Marcano possibly the most expensive 2yo Millman has had. His 2yos seem more ready FTO this year although some of that apparent readiness may be ok ability. A bit leggy and slightly compact and probably taller than the Arcano's are likely to be. Looks a bit of a 'Frame' at the moment and see how he develops physically. If he fills out well then poss ok for 88+. Like many in the field din't show anything startling with the last 2F effort and took longer to get going than some and then staying back to 3rd late on.

Hannon usually starts other solid maiden winners in the race alongside his 'best' one and Among Angels ought to be 80+. Lighter build than some as the Hannon quote suggested. Would have finished closer to 2nd but for getting bumped back for 2L+ by the hanging KB and his attender.. AA then hooking up with the staying on Marcano to show a similar solid finish.

Aledaid is presumably the Coventry targetted 2yo the Hannon's had here and looks the part. Big, deep and strong. Dettori rode him as if he was a good one, Hauling him back early but letting Aledaid sneak forward on the outside as the pace upped inside the last 2.5f, Jk able to let him move up towards a challenging position ins-2f with the horse going his own pace and not asked for an effort. When Dettori did ask less happened than he was probably expecting and we didn't get the zip clear that Canfiord Cliffs & Strong Suit showed. Aledaid instead looking a bit bulky and not quite shifting his weight yet and carried on at the same pace. A bump and carried left hand and then starting to tire in the last 0.5f. Dettori easing him late which meant he definitely lost 3rd place to the pair staying on. Ought to be the best in the field and would expect the Hannons top say something like "He needed the run more thna we thought... see a different horse STO.." But, worht checking whether he does move his weight properly when let down for his effort STO.

What to make of Silver Quay? When Hughes was the first choice you knew which was the best of the Hannon runners in this race. With the Al Shaqab retained Dettori on Aledaid perhaps too much was expected of Hughes' choise SQ? On the other han Hughes does have an excellent record for knowing how good then are before they run. A shorter and compact one but deep and strong. Ought to be a solid 80+ on size. But, sleepy in the prelims and a mild Market drift suggesting perhaps he was just a usual Hannon support one in the field and not a challenger to Aledaid. Hughes, like Piggott, Fallon & Dettori before, seems to have reached a stage in his career when he does what he wants to do in races and doesn't feel he has to bother with how things look from outside. A reasonable break by SQ but then verring left immediately and was that the horse or Hughes pulling him unbalanced? Hughes seemed set on a teach-to-settlr debut rather than a competitive one. A poor response when Hughes vaguely asked for hs 2f effort and Hughes soon gave up and waiting for STO. If he had come back and made a WTRB saying the horse 'Ran Flat, or whayever, then fine. But we dont get that info and the stewards didn't bother asking either. Would have been better if Hughes hadn't both with the 'Rocking Horse' style pretend pushing for a bit in the last 2f.

Goring running too free in front line and producing a similar effort to KB for 1f before being slightly hampered and then fading. Slightly narrow in this bulkier group but probably ok for 75. See whether he improves STO or regresses before coming back as some do for the trainer.

Likeable efforts from both the 7th & 8th home. Mustadeem another by Arcano and looking unlike his 'neat' sire. this one a bigger and solidly built one but a bit raw overall and green and a bit fizzy. Given a HnH in the last 2f but a solid effot and should improve notably. Captain Marmalade a 20k one by a sire who has achieved very little in 2 season with 2yo runners and only wins at 7f. A medium one but solid build and neatly made. Given a ride designed to see him finish last as if he was being developed for Nurseries. Hauled to the back and out of the race. But a good effort 2F out and took him past half the field before 1f out. Interesting have seen where that effort would have got him to from 2R-2f. Looks a solid Open Maiden type on that effort.

Then into the sub-75 ones and worse from 9th back with the exception of SQ & Dutch Portrait. Paul Cole often starts a good one either in this maiden or in the Dante Meeting 6f maiden, as with Berkshire in 2013. The better ones usually end up at 6/1 or shorter (Berkshire 3rd at 6/1 supp from 9/1) so DPortrait at 40/1 seems a negative. But another raw one and green in atitude. Kept getting unbalanced in the last 2f so didn't show what effort he might have been able to produce. But an 80 one on PRev and see if he is fixed and shorter SP STO.

Probably the odd minor winner behind but what to make of Sylvester Kirk? Son-in-Law to Hannon and worked there as an assistant. Why doesn't he just reproduce what the Hannons do and live off the commercial 'ecosystem' surrounding that yard? His record with 2yos ony ever aspired to average at best and has steadily got worse to be poor now. Lifeless debuts, few winners and less runners overall. Two runners here at 75k & 30k but both looking a bit oddly dhaped in this group and too green to compete. Western Playboy looking a slower 'Galloping' Kodiac before fading. Both starting at 150/1 which the smallest yard yard would be insulted by with one that cost 75k, Baffling.
