GSS from GGS on Decs. 20mm rain on Mon with 3mm overnight. Stiff SW Wind = just under a 1/2 Headwind fom the left. Stalls Stands' Side. Link to The Wow Signal's Breeze Video for Reference = ASCT Breeze Video Another Result mystifying on Paper. A Final Time more in line with SHV and distances between the runners at the finish as if it was an NH race. What would you expect to see watching the video for the first time having read the result? Perhaps a thunderstorm had turned the ground to a bog and only one horse handled it? (No). All-out Pace War between, at least, a Line-of-3 and the two horses too clueless to get going properly trundling through to 1st/2nd as the others have reduced themselves to a walk 1f out? (No). Well What? then. Well another race that didn't play out in any normal manner. The Slow Time caused by a very slow pace set by The Wow Signal. A bit of pulling & FFH by Poolstock but he, along with Jungle Cat, going ok to 2.5f out. The race makes sense visually if you only consider TWS and Doctor Charm who race in Indian File on the Stands' Rail for the whole race. TWS is being held by his jockey for most of the race with the horse's head to the right as he braces himself against the hold and bit. TWS looking a very strong 'tank' in front. DC dutifully follows after him and can't make any ground on TWS in the last 2f so the jk starts pulling up in the last 1F (with the other 3 having disappeared quickly) to produce the 9L 1st->2nd distance. JC, Poolstock & Al Rayyan go from moving ok to floundering around inside the last 2f and all three are walking before 1F out while the two carriage train on the rail chugs on as in a different race. Rail Bias that big?, or is it more sensible to try to explain why the last 3 home expired so quickly by putting it down to them? The following two races are Divisions of a Class 6 hcap for 4yo+. Div I inconclusive in Rail Bias terms because despite the evidence from Race 1 only one horse runs along it for most of the race. He is being driven along from early on and doesn't stop but finishes midfield. All the others run away from the rail for all or most of the race and finish in a heap, all walking at the finish and slower time than this race. The winner did cross to the rail soon after Halfway though and found a response when challenged late on. Div II better for a Rail Bias theory with the winner the horse that ran in 2R on rail and always going well. Pulled away for a clear win after switching around the rail leader (small one that finished 4th) and a 77.12s time. The 2nd/3rd in that race the two that were Ldg & 2R in Lane 1 with the wider runners well distanced. Is there a Camber from Stands to Far Side at Ayr in the HS. Clearly a difficult race to read sensibly but TWS a short price for a Quinn debut which often is a good sign and TWS has been entered in various 5f races before. Even with the bias here he saw off DC comfortably and didn't stop. DC just a smaller medium on in the group and perhaps usable 70? and not the 2nd best horse here. JCat's work picture from early year shows a shorter but well built one and he looked to have developed ok here. Although this was a 'lost' debut in did not look to be JC's fault. He wasn't the classic MaJo debut floundering about like they have never gone above a walk before. Seems ok for 75+ and worth parking this effort for the time being. Al Rayyan perhaps the tallest and looking very bulky behind in the Stalls shots from behind. Built like a ball and hard to believe he was Fit enough given his dhape. Also seemed a less good mover on this surface than the others and struggling earlier and getting unbalanced. Hard to judge what level he is. Poolstock a bit more length and range compared to AR and seemed to handle the going fine. Pulling too mauch for the first 2f to add to running wide of the rail. Given that he made an ok effort at 2F out to get past JC & AR as they didn't pick up. But Poolstock fading to a walk quickly in line with his pulling and track position. Looked ok for 70+ and another to give another chance to assess STO in a more sensible race set-up. Worth noting that the winner is the second runner for FS Sire Starspangledbanner and both have won but look nothing like each other. The sire's next runner is Rockaroundtheclock at GDWD two days on. So far none of the other FSS have made a strong impact with their early runners, like Dandy Man did in 2013 for eg. perhaps SSB is the boy. Worth noting that he was 'sub fertile' at Coolmore Stud (probably less than 50% mares covered getting into foal) which was why he went back to racing. Coolmore took the Insurance Policy money because they couldn't stand a stallion commercially with that level of fertility. The Insurance Company then have to find something to do with the horse they now own. Since Starspangledbanner was last reported as being back in Australia at the stud where he was bred and foaled you presume it was place him in a 'good home' for the rest of his days. But, it will be interesting to see what happens if the 2yos he did sire in his one period at stud in Europe turn out a good level of useful ones (as ever helped by the qulity of mares he got in his first book - who then move onto the next 'New Big Thing' the following year). |
