SUMMARY
SOFT by Race Time following 5mm of rain from around 12:30pm. 15mm of rain Overnight and Going changed to GGS (G on Decs so presume close to GF before the rain).

Field raced stands rail side. But, Portamento racing professionally STO and get a Very Easy time leading on the rail. He ran straight down the rail and possibly an advantage in itself. An advantage of some sort here with the 5 that finished 3rd+ all racing side of the rail and then rolling wider towards 2F out as Portamento increased the pace a little bit for the final 2F Sprint off a slow pace. Secret Journey in 2nd place inside the last 2F and doing the the best job of those behid running in a straight line and doing it in Lane 1. Estidkhaar racing widest and looking green and how good an effort to get to 2nd?

Appleby Godolphin debuts so far in 2014 (his first full year) have looked less ready mentally and physically than typical Sh Moh/Godolphin FTOs debuts. Over a long period they often look very (too) fit FTO and often with sweating allied to taut and fizzy attitudes. Which seemed to go with their form tailing off after STO, often quickly. Portamento the 3rd STO of year for Appleby and the horse clearly a different racehorse. His other STOs have both finished 2 at KTNA looking more competent if not mentally fully tuned. Portamento got a soft time in the lead but his winning margin could have been much more. He looked a visual 8L or more ahead going to the line and then heavily eased. Dane O'Neill on Estidkhaar in clear 2nd taking time to do likewise.

The theory about Appleby FTO->STO MO having more evidence added with FTO Pinter losing ground, floundering around and generally looking unprepared - just like Portamento had at NMKT.

Hannon senior very fond of GDWD and always wanted to be Champion Trainer there each year and started many of his better, and best, 2yos there. One niggle with Estidkhaar is that he started a season a moderate one for Hamdan in the race in 2013 (but as a stable 2nd string).

Secret Journey a firsr 2yo runner for Morrisson and he often used to start a couple of competitive 2yos in these late May maidens at GDWD. Has not had many usable 2yos in 2012-13 and no debuts until late July. In 2010-11 the first debuts were in the first week of July and he was notable for Front-loading a batch of his competitive 2yos. A quiet debut followed by STO or 3TO peaks with wins and places typical and horses progress consistently from debut if STO still unplaced but an improvement on FTO. SJ showing enough promise here to be a competitive one?
