SUMMARY

=== Pre Race ===

Trainer Cowell aged 47 now and got his first licence in 1997 aged 29. Look at his record with 2yos and it was stuck at between 4-8 horses each season 1999-2013. Between zero & 3 winners each year and the Strike Rate often below average with odd blank years. Able to get FTO winners and a batch in 2007-09 with high class 2yos. Only one since, a delayed 6f debut in 2014. Overall, the debuts looking less competitive recently. During that period he has found a niche to progress his career as a trainer of older sprinters. Group 1 win with Prohibit and won a Listed race with the 10yo Kingsgate Native the weekend before this race. Perhaps a sign of his increased profile (finally) that he jumped to 14 x 2yos in 2014. Still only got 3 individual winners and the Strike Rate still poor. Has 28 x 2yos listed on his website for 2015.

Westbourne Grove and the filly Jumeirah Star both bought at Keeneland's September yearling sales. JS a sibling to the stables Speed Hawk bought for the same owner at $55k. Cowell in 215 saying she is a similar size & type to her older brother (100+ rated at 3yo+). Spencer riding JS as he tries to prove he can win FTO on a 2yo in a, vanilla, Type 1 manner. Market presumably reacting to that and JS around 4/1 in early AM with Westbourne Grove at 12/1. But, are either of them likely to be ready to compete to win FTO? How good would they have to be to do that? WG made Cowell's 'Bargain Buy' in 215 saying WG looks "well bought", "really good looking", "already done some work and should be a runner". JStar reported as not having done similar 'work' at that stage compared to WG. Jk Beschizza rides.

Dark Side Princess an unusually expensive 2yo for the stable and the first higher priced Breeze buy. DSP sold at the lesser of the two Tatts Breeze sales. At 48k above the average figures for that sale with 153 Lots sold for a Mean of 31,366gns & a median of 23,500gns. DSP looking a solid medium size and ok build in the gather and enough size to think the 48k was not pedigree influenced. But, both physically and in the breeze does not look a 5f type. Lengthier body, still up behind and more a 7f developer. Once the breeze starts that looks more like. Runs straight but an average speed action at most, using more rasnge and looking more of a roll-along galloper. 5f start just to get her going?
