GF as on decs. 10mm watering on Wed & 4mm on Friday. Stalls Stands' Side. Strong SSW wind = 3/4+ Headwind. === Pre Race === Fahey SL quote = "Doncaster next and Drifting Spirit who makes her debut in the Maiden Fillies' Stakes. She’s no superstar but is getting better all the time at home and is ready to start out.". === Post Race === Field raced in ranks close to stands Rail until fanning out last 2f as fillies trying to make forward moves but blocked by 1st 5 throough Halfway folding back. with Pace not looking strong but presumably too quick given the headwind. Halfway Positions to Final Placings suggest a race setting up for Closers. Making ground out wide in the last 2f difficult with Raaqy, Alsaden & Canny Style working forward through gaps closer to the rail. Drifting Spirit widest of closers. Inclined to view that running prominently into the headwind and running too wide of rail negatives to some extent in race. Suspect there is some mix of abilities at the finish because of that. For example, Canny Style looking a smaller one in context and last after the slowest break. Stll 13th near the rail towards last 2f and blocked a bit working through the faders. But finishing close to best. Not convinced she is as promising as the finish looked and perhaps not a certail STO converter. Some similar questions over how promising Poplar Close was "staying on nicely and catching the eye" to use the appropriate Punditspeak. Shorter and solidly built and Ok? 70+, or not. . Dessertofliffe looking a solid medium rangy stayer in her picture and ran well enough to stand that up. Leading before 2f out and not headed until into the last 0.5f and a late fade. Raaqy also a grey and looking a similar physical type and perhaps a bit stronger. Hillside Dream green and then staying on STO looking promising. Up in trip by 0.5f here but still looking some mix of clueless and any attitude? Slow break wide, dropping in. Flopping around when asked to make progress wide rather than head down and professional. Racing wide probably a negative but HDream still looking too green to put a race together. Either a very slow learner or perhaps not convinced about being a racehorse. Track devt. See how race develops but would not expect it to be a straightforward story of the winner is successful at a higher level and the only other Open Maiden winners in the field are in the first 4-6 places. Suspect it will work out in a more patchwork manner with some of first 6 not up to Open Maiden level and some Open Maiden winners behind. [June 26th] Alsaaden & Drifting Spirit drawn next to each other on the stands rails and interesting to compare their paths & efforts through the race given they re-oppose STO over the shorter 6f at this course. Alsaaden a faster break but shuffled back to 4R on the rail as the field collapsed onto it. A bit unbalanced which allowed Drifting Spirit to get back past her having made a slower break. Through halfway and the pair alongside each other. Both then switching left soon into the last 3f with the chances of a run near the rail very small. Alsaaden going past DS around 2f out and moving well and professionally and able to be in close 2R to 1.5f out and make her final effort. DS more green and a bit head up and hesitant but making a similar effort once going forward. Alsaaden maintaining her effort to the line while DS stalling a bit in the last 0.5f but also probably carried Left by another. DS taller than Alsaaden and less knowing here. Alsaaden showing more than just making ground through faders with her effort from 2f+ out. Should be closer STO but the move made by Alsaaden making her preferred STO over 6f. DS more professional STO? [June 26th] Varian still not had a 2yo winner in 2015. Debuts mostly uncompetitive. Re-watching the video then Aneesah running much better than the final result suggested. Ran in 2R on the rail and picked up ok into the last 2f. Challenging for the lead and still 2nd into the last 1f. Stall and fade hid that promise. If she stepped down to 6f she would have been a close 2nd on debut at that distance and into a stiff headwind. Steps up to 7f STO a slight niggle. Just looking a medium one in the group and not a powerhouse but ok around 75 STO. |
