SUMMARY

=========

Pre Race VRev = First Selection well named and represents a number of 'Firsts'. He was Lot 1 at the Brightwells 2y Breeze Sale - the first Breeze Sale of the year. He is the First Breeze Sale graduate to run as a 2yo this season nearly 4 weeks after his April 1st Sale. He has been entered for a variety of races before this one. He is also the first 2yo runner fro trainer Crisford as he tries to build a role for himself back in the real world after the Godolphin debacle. Looking at his Breeze Video and number of things stand out. He looks a good size and solidly built. He also moves straight and £42k was a higher level price at the sale whose 2014 edition produced some good winners. But, there are some niggles about his movement and FS starting on SWEL's deep fibresand surface may be linked to his movement. He moves straight but with his head up and an upright front generally. The little nodding he does is from the top of his neck and an entirely different set-up to some horses who race with their head forward and down and seem to stretch more. He does not give the impression of showing much range/reach nor change of pace. Look down below that upright neck/head and he seems to show a solid knee action in front and a round action which looks a bit 'scrabbly'. Hard to think firm turf would suit it and perhaps why he starts on this surface. Looks a solid size but does his movement use his power efficiently? Has he learnt to nod fully, move his neck down, reach in front, etc.

Reflektor featured in the 'Visuals AND Numbers' article from early in 2015 as an example of a yearling video to review before a 2yo runs. Reflektor has a 5f 2yo pedigree and £45k cheap if he was at the better end of his full siblings ability level. The best of them a filly who won here FTO on April 4th in her year and won the Listed Marygate Stakes. In his yearling video Reflektor looks 'as advertised' as a complete looking ready 2yo type who should be out early. Probably lacking some size and scope (as Bahamian Babe did) but should be ok for 75 early. Balanced walker.

=============

Moderate Race on Profile and weaker than expected with Reflektor a disappointment in PRev and then being pulled up in the race. Looked as if the horse would not face the Kickback and the Jk took the reluctance as something physically wrong. Reflektor pulled up around halfway and walked back down the track rugged. Simply Clever small and underpowered. Luvly bulky but still not fit. Which left First Selection with the job of beating the filly Mistymoistymorning who is at least a size smaller than FS all round although fit and ready for the Day. FS showing the same KA he did at the sale.

Trainer Crisford interviewed after the race and some general points of interest. Said he had a full yard of 45 horses of which 35 were 2yos. The majority were more "backward" types who wouldn't be seen until July onward. Not sure that is the right use of 'backward 2yo' and paints you into a verbal corner. If a 7f July debut is 'backward' what are you going to call one who runs once over 8f in November? Crisford said the owner had picked out FS at the Breeze Sale, loved him so had to buy him. An interesting insight into how many trainers might not have exactly the same horses in their yards as they would if the choice was only down to themselves.

=== Post VRev ===

First Selection winning a bit comfortably and not concentrating in the last 1.5f and given a mostly full ride. Uses his head/neck a bit better and some nodding now but still the tendency to bring the head upright and hence the active Jk de Sousa. Still shows a solid knee action and pound and not reaching out. Tallest here but a touch narrow and not a full Open Maiden type & say 74. Movement still gives the impression he is a grinder at his pace and nothing much will happen if you ask for a kick 2f out.

Other points Crisford mentioned in interview were that because FS had been ""well prepared by Con Marnane" for the breeze he had not had to do much with FS to get him ready. Crisford's reason for SWEL seemed to be he wanted FS to win a Sires' Median Auction Maiden so that he "slotted into another race". Do not really follow that because there are similar races at the same Class level at lots of Courses and FS has been entered for most of of them in April. Was Crisford meaning he did not go for a Novice/Conditions FTO and thinks highly of the horse?

Crisford being interviewed by the fatter, bibulous McGrath who persistently contravened the 'Top Tips' from recently deceased Cricket Commentator which included "Don't ask statements". He also was in everything-about-you-is-marvellous mode and stated to Crisford that FS had "tremendous scope". You half expected the discussion to be about whether FS could do the Coventry/Dewhurst double. A moment when you wished David Barron was the trainer and calmly explained to McGrath how good the horse was. Crisford much to polite & PR aware to do a Barron and also has to butter-up the owner who choce the horse at the sales (nothing to do with times mentioned). Crisford deflected the STATEMENT from McGrath about FS needing 6f and said FS has "shown a lot of toe out there". As with Crisford's use of the word backward this seems a questionable starting point to be using a phrase like lot-of-toe. He has run 61.06s for a flat 5f and had a smaller filly chasing him to the line. How would FS look trying to do sub 59s on firmer turf? Hard to imagine his movement allows that. Presume a Nursery future.

Mistymoistymorning looking lean and fit for the day. Lacking some power and sciope. Mosly competent in the race but overpowered by the stronger FS at the weights. Usable at her level say around 60.

Luvly being led up by the trainer and laughably unfit. Unlike debut looked a bit hesistant in the race and not putting everything in. Has the bulk to be usable 60 if he can shift it well enough and presumably being brought along slowly for a Nursery mark.

Simply Clevercheap buy and Jk Turner allowed to ride it which is probably a lower level indicator. Looked to have some power from some angles but overall effect of a mentally young and lower 50s one. Slow start hampered by Luvly then able to get back ahead of Luvly (who looked a touch unwilling) but well adrift of the leading pair and an early fade.

Even if you assume Reflektor hasn't grown at all from the yearling video on the Dascombe website he looked a smaller one here and the 70+ take from the Video needs a rethink. Also the 'Size' base marker from those videos. Looked a 60s one here.
