GF early AM as on Decs. Watering as 5mm on Monday and 3mm on Tuesday. Going Stick at 9.0. Clerk of Course Gundill likes watering and doesn't want his ground to seem too fast. The firmest GStick reading he has had at any meeting since start 2012 has been 8.8, the second highest at 8.5 (termed GFF in 2014 and Maftool broke the 6f Course Record). He usually likes to water enough to return a GStick figure of 8.0 or less. Rail on Inner Line (fully in). Stiff- WSW Wind = 1/2 Tailwind from Right in HS, slight Headwind from Right first 3f. ======Pre Race ====== Hard to see why Rockcliffe is starting here in a Northern £10k Bonus race for Channon. On that you would expect a better one but the Work Video a negative. An early one from March 17th and an unpressurised work for 4 x 2yos behind a lead horse. None of the 2yos go past the lead and looking a early Grass work. Rockcliffe at the rear and out of clear shot for much of the Gallop but is niggled along earliest and most. On the later and pull up shots he looks the smallest of the 4 x 2yos having gone least well. Jaadu & Vostok who are still both unraced go best and finished alongside the lead horse and could have done more. Has Rockliffe improved or the start here for some other reason? ======= Very fast conditions with notably firm ground (and a recent record firm GStick reading), the rail in and a Tailwind. This time equalling the best since start 2012 by Kune Kune (OR85+ dual winning 2yo who transferred to the US). === Post VRev === Fast Time off a usable pace but with Sixth Sense notably upping the pace before 2f out on the bend and stretching the field. SS looking close to biggest in the field, in best condition and the most professional and straight moving on the going. Given all that he pulled clear and still going forward solidly at the line. SS comes from a NWBY maiden which looked a strong race at the front (plus Thaqaffa). But, the PRev suggesting the first 3 not quite as marvellous and obvious Group types as the ridiculously Fast Time might suggest. April has seen a lot of High Pressure, little rain and a lot of unsual Easterly Winds to produce unusually fast conditions at a range of Courses. But, SS looking better here and should stay 6f. 85+ you would expect MaJo to try Group races with him. First To Post out of an Italian Group 1 winner who needed middle distances. The more you learn and think about the phrase 'Italian Group 1' the more you realise it is an oxymoron, or whatever the correct word is. In short, a lot of them do not amount to Group 3s in countries with stronger, better quality, racing. He cost a piffling 70,000gns considering he sould at Tattersalls premier sale and he is the first foal of a, ahem, 'Group 1 winner'. Lack of size as a yearling perhaps some of the issue. Just a medium size and build in this field and also looking in lesser condition. Also hanging left most of the time in the HS. The previous paragraph leading up to a bit BUT, because FTO putting up a spirited, and pretty strong, chase of SS in the HS despite the issues. Balanced set-up and presumably strong with it. On this has more ability than size would suggest and could improve just for better condition and not hanging. Solid 80+ and unusually better than he appears? Bossipop doing a number of things wrong including breaking slowly from the widest stall and then running too freely out wide. But, clearly 3rd best in the race and the late fade hiding that. A medium side but looking chunky and strong, bulkier than FTP, for example. Seemed to move mostly ok but check foreleg recovery. Physical type in line with his pedigree and 75+ and a good buy at £14k. Easterby presumably mostly interested in the 'Pipalong in the Family' angle. Rest of the field looking smaller compared to front 3 and some too green. Dodgy Bob not looking a better Ryan type and a compact 70ish sprinter that peaks STO. Rockliffe looking in line with the inmpression from his Work Gallop Video. Probably the smallest in the field and looking 'complete' and unlikely to grow much. Ran competently from a good draw but overpowered in the last 2f+. Low 60s? Safe Voyage a bit more bulk than some in the rear here and effectively never put into the race and given an 'Educational Into'. A bit green and a slower start then running too free after getting going. Hauled back to last by the Jk by Halfway. Hanging left and not getting going in the HS. Should be usable 60s. Roman Times the fifth debut for Dascombe and the previous 4 were 6th, 7th, 4th and Pulled Up. Going to need a better class natural to get an early FTO win on his current prep for FTO. Very different from his early career Hot-Housing. RT probably the second smallest and lacking fitness, condition and nous. Driven along before Halfway and a poor effort in the HS before fading and eased. Even 60? and no reason for interest here. |
