GSG in early am from G on Decs. 18mm rain on Sunday. Strong to Stiff Westerly WInd = 3/4+ Headwind in the HS. === Pre Race === Hannon jks = Hughes (PLuigi), Dobbs (Dyllan), Hardie (CHonours), D O'Neill (WPark), Inland Sea (Bentley). Hughes has said GDWD will be his last week riding before he retires to start his training career. === Post Race === One of those races where the Draw bears very little relation to where horses ran. 14 stalls required and with 14 runners one bank of 10 stalls out from the stands rail then the double stall gap and the other 4 in stalls wide out in centre track. But, with nothing inside wanting to go on Poet's Song & Inland Sea able to jog across from 2 of the wide draws (ISea actually being held back) to end up the leading pair on the rail. Dyllan also from the 'wide 4' draws tagging along in 2R behind them. With the field going a usable pace that left the pair on the rail in the lead in a good spot and traffic difficulties for anuything wanting to make ground from behind. Inland Sea proving big enough to make use of the pace/rail advantage to win. Poet's Song not good enough. Meanwhile, what was going on behind takes some unravelling. Hughes, having run down the stands rail earlier on Palawan on a round course finish ended up racing wide out in centre track here. Papa Luigi here with OR79 tag but should be better than that but has run too freely before. PL wearing an XNB and Hughes very much in teach-to-settle mode left PL well back behind a usable pace and having to go on a tour of the course to make progress. Might well have won without that. Similar problems for Operative or he might have won. Held back to stop free running and too far back then struggling to find a gap when needed. But, Operative again head up and hanging at various times and not helping his jk. Without that would probably have beaten PL in a straight race. Sectional Times of the leaders at each 1f mark follow. Note the Slow final 1f (part mild uphill) for Inland Sea despite the usable pace but with a strong Headwind. That slow last 1f allowing the closing, via variious routes, of the better (IC) & readier types to make the first 4 (Check what type Scarlet Dragon actually is (made the shortest route to close). := 1st 1f = 12.43secs 2nd 1f = 11.23s 3rd 1f = 11.01s 4th 1f = 11.51s 5th 1f = 11.57s 6th 1f = 12.98s |
